F-F H.S. Highlights: G-A's Parks earns Yeager victory

Greencastle-Antrim freshman Taryn Parks got her cross country career off to a great start Friday by crossing the line first in the annual Enos Yeager Invitational at Falling Spring Elementary School.

Parks finished the 2.38-mile course in 14:24, finishing 21 seconds ahead of her teammate, Lauren Hirneisen.

Chambersburg's Kaylee Mowery took third in 14:46 and the Trojans' Cadie Kiser was fifth in 15:29. Chambersburg held out No. 1 runner Abby Yourkavitch due to a nagging injury.

"It would have been a nice battle if Abby had run," Trojan coach Chris Monheim said. "Taryn's time was right around where Abby finished in this last year.

"Mowery and Kiser had their fastest times in this meet, and two freshman - Anna DeGrange (12th, 16:20) and Camaryn Ellis (22nd, 16:59) - showed they can help us out quite a bit this year. It's nice to have a couple of new girls providingn some varsity points for us."

Monheim also pointed out that the 25th placer, Madison Ford, had a fine meet.

"No girl I've coached has improved as much in one year as she has," he said.

Shippensburg's Ava Franklin was the next highest finisher local runner, in 20th place in 16:58.

Carlisle's dominant team was the story of the boys race. The Herd, which will have a great chance to win a PIAA title, took six of the top seven places, with only Chambersburg's Andrew Feldman, fifth in 13:07, breaking them up.

Senior Noah Affholder won the race in 11:49 and his sophomore brother Sam Affolder was second in 12:20. The brothers transfered from New York since last year.

Trojan coach John Ambrosio said, "The senior is a favorite to win the Foot Locker Nationals this year, and he had the fastest 3200 time in the country (8:47) last year. Carlisle has the best team in the state."

Also for Chambersburg, Trentin Overcash was eighth in 13:14, then Quinn Mangan (13:44), Patrick Zook (13:48) and Donovan Hazelton (14:49) placed 15th through 17th.

"We ran better than we did in our time trials," Ambrosio said. "The time gap (42 seconds) was good and the pack of guys ran well. Feldman did well to break up Carlisle's top five and Overcash had a super day. We exceeded my expectations today, so I'm happy."

James Buchanan's Dalton Leab ran the course in 13:15 to place ninth, followed right behind by Greencastle's Andrew Johnson (13:25).
