H.S. Highlights: Records fall at Rt. 16 Invite
For the second time this season, Liam Okal got his name in the Greencastle-Antrim record books.
Okal ran the 400 in 49.88, which was good enough for the school record and the Kaley Field stadium record. He led a very successful Monday for the Blue Devils, who hosted the Antrim Way Honda Route 16 Invitational.
Okal was also victorious in the 200 with a time of 23.29.
Campbell Parker was the only other boy for Greencastle to win two events, taking first in the discus (166-05) and the shot put (50-4.75).
On the girls side, Cassidy Fritz led the way in the 100 hurdles (17.42) and the 300 hurdles (53.23). It was a photo finish for Fritz in the 100 hurdles, as she edged Waynesboro’s Mikayla Bryan by less than two-tenths of a second.
Mercersburg Academy’s Finley Stewart had a fine day, winning every event she participated in. Individually, she took first in the 100, 200 and 400, and also helped the winning 4x400 team.
Another standout for the Blue Storm was Isiuwa Oghagbon, who broke her own school record in the discus with a throw of 125-1.
Waynesboro's top performer of the day was Madeline Spears, who won the long jump (15-2.5) and the triple jump (33-9).

Baseball
Shippensburg 9, Big Spring 7: Shippensburg broke a two-game losing streak with a Mid Penn Colonial Division win over Big Spring. The Greyhounds (8-6, 4-4 MPC) finished with 13 hits, including three from Cole Friese and two apiece by Zane Hershey, Hunter Johnson, Adam Maring and Teagan Staver. Johnson racked up four RBIs, while Friese and Nathan Holt both belted a triple.
Southern Huntingdon 2, Fannett-Metal 1: Despite out-hitting Southern Huntingdon, 7-4, Fannett-Metal suffered another close loss in SHL/ICC action. The Tigers (4-12, 2-10 SHL, 2-10 SHL) left 10 runners stranded in scoring position. Brandon Winegardner led the offense with two hits.
“We have had our chances so many times this season to pull out some big wins against the top teams, and we always manage to let them slip away,” F-M coach Jamie Funk said. “The same thing that has hurt us all year was our downfall again today. We just can’t seem to come up with the big hits with runners in scoring position.”
Southern Fulton 9, Hancock 3: After a tough two-loss week, the Indians were solid against Hancock in a non-league game. The Potter brothers stood out for the Indians, with sophomore Mitch earning his first career win on the mound to become the seventh Southern Fulton pitcher to register a win this season. His brother Carl helped at the plate with three RBIs for the Indians (13-3).
“We took advantage of what we were given while hitting,” Southern Fulton coach Dustin Fischer said. “And it’s nice to have a deep pitching staff we can go to.”
James Buchanan 2, Boiling Springs 0: Remi Spoonhour allowed just four hits in a Mid Penn Colonial Division victory over Boiling Springs. The Rockets (8-8, 2-6 MPC) scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for the win. Gage Piper had two hits.
Forbes Road 2, Everett 0: Two early runs and a solid pitching effort by Grayson Hall gave Forbes Road a SHL/ICC victory over Everett. Hall pitched all seven innings and allowed just three hits, struck out eight and walked two for Forbes Road (9-5, 9-4 SHL/ICC).
“Hall pitched an excellent game,” Forbes Road coach Randy Gelvin said. “He kept hitters off-balance most of the night.”
Forbes Road 6, Hyndman 4: Forbes Road hung on to a non-league game over Hyndman after the Hornets threatened the lead in the third, but the Cardinals added a safety run in the fourth to put away the victory. Matt Brown earned the win, while Brycen Hohman got the save, striking out six batters in three innings. Brown and Aaron Schepis both went 3-for-4 for the Cardinals (10-5).
Gelvin said, “Hohman came in and pitched real well, and we hit the ball fairly well but missed a lot of scoring opportunities.”
Shalom Christian 18, Cumb. Valley Christian 8: Shalom Christian used two big innings to put away Cumberland Valley Christian in an MDCC game. The Flames scored nine runs in the fourth inning, and five in the top of the seventh as the nail in the coffin in an 18-8 victory. Jake Holderman earned his first win of the season for Shalom (8-6, 7-4 MDCC) and struck out 10 CVC (4-6, 2-5 MDCC) batters.
IPSL championship, Mercersburg Academy 8, St. James 3: The Blue Storm (17-4) were locked in a 2-1 game until scoring six runs in the fifth inning to put away the Saints and claim the IPSL title. Jayvien Sandridge had two hits and a pair of RBIs for Mercersburg. Chris Adusie-Poku also drove in two runs, Carlos Mancilla and Will Oakley each had two hits and Miles Hearon (4-1) earned the win with relief help from Oakley.
Softball
James Buchanan 16, Boiling Springs 2 (5): James Buchanan scored 16 runs off of 11 hits in an MPC game against Boiling Springs in five innings, but also allowed two unearned runs on five errors in the 16-2 victory. Nina Shatzer threw a two-hitter through four innings of work, striking out six batters for the Rockets (9-4, 4-4 MPC), and Jenna Mongold went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Big Spring 6, Shippensburg 3: With the playoffs on the line, the Shippensburg softball team dropped a tough MPC game to Big Spring, thanks to a lackluster offense that stranded 11 runners on base. Courtney Coy pitched through four innings and allowed four earned runs. She struck out six for Shippensburg (9-7, 4-4 MPC).
“We sure didn’t play with any fire tonight,” Shippensburg coach Mike Peters said. “Big Spring put together a solid fifth to break the tie, but sloppy defense hurt us.”
Everett 8, Forbes Road 3: Everett doubled up on Forbes Road in the hits column and earned an SHL/ICC victory. The Cardinals (5-10, 4-9 SHL, 4-8 ICC) finished with just five hits and committed four errors. Olivia Hall and Courtney Schoen each had a pair of singles.
“We played a solid game and gave a very good team a handful for six innings,” Forbes Road coach Pete Hall said. “They strung together some offense in the bottom of the sixth to put a tight game out of reach.”
Hyndman 9, Forbes Road 4: Immediately after playing Everett, Forbes Road boarded the bus and suffered a non-league loss to Hyndman. This time, the Cardinals (5-11) actually managed more hits than their opponent but couldn’t capitalize. Tina Parsons, Olivia Hall and Courtney Schoen all had two hits.
“After climbing on the bus to ride between games, we put together a quality effort against another top team from District 5,” Forbes Road coach Pete Hall said. “Tina Parsons followed Courtney Schoen’s performance from the early game with a solid effort in the circle. Both girls gave us a chance to win today.”
Girls Soccer
Shalom Christian 3, Cumb. Valley Christian 1: The Flames’ 1-2 punch on attack was the difference in the MDCC rivalry game. Shalom’s Brooke Emge and Lexy Poe each scored a goal in the first half, with Lydia Harris getting an assist. Emily Bard scored for the Blazers (3-6-1, 1-6-1 MDCC) on a pass from Isabel Beard just before halftime, but another goal by Emge late (Bethany Blank assist) sealed the deal for the Flames (12-1, 10-1 MDCC).
CVC coach Paul Lundy said, “We played evenly in the second half and were able to get some very good looks. It was a one-goal game until about 10 minutes to go.”

Trinity 20, Chambersburg 3: The Trojans’ record fell to 1-15 (1-11 MPC).
