H.S. Highlights: 'Boro sits alone in first in softball
Halfway through the softball season, Waynesboro has officially taken sole possession of first place in the Mid Penn Colonial Division.
The Maidens once again got their bats going, racking up 13 hits in a 9-4 defeat of Big Spring on Tuesday afternoon.
"We just keep playing fundamental ball and putting the pressure on teams," 'Boro coach Aaron Burke said. "I would say at this point I don't think anyone believed we would be in the position we are, except the girls. We just continue to enjoy the moment and believe in our team."
Katie Wise was unstoppable for the Maidens (8-4, 4-1 MPC), going 4-for-4 with a triple. Nicole Kreimer, Jenna Powell, Tiff Stull and Sara Gsell all had a pair of hits.
Caitlyn Pollock went the distance, scattering seven hits and striking out three. Only two of the Bulldogs’ runs were earned.
SEESAW AFFAIR: The error bug hit McConnellsburg in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference loss to Forbes Road, 8-6.
The Spartans (2-11, 1-9 SHL, 1-8 ICC) had eight errors, six of which came in the two innings that Forbes Road scored all eight of its runs.
“If it had been an errorless game, we might still be playing,” Spartan coach Junior Swope said. “We were 0-0 at the end of the fifth, and then it just fell apart.”
Despite taking the loss, Swope said pitcher Carly Swope threw a fine game, allowing eight hits and five strikeouts. She was also 2-for-4.
Olivia Hall led the Cardinals (3-8, 3-8 SHL, 3-7 ICC) with a single and a double. The win breaks a five-game skid for Forbes.
“It was good to get back in the win column," FR coach Pete Hall said. "We caught a few breaks, then came up with a few big hits. The girls have played better the past few nights, and we’re hoping that will lead to a strong second half of the season.”
TRACK DELAY: Chambersburg competed at Harrisburg in a track & field meet Tuesday, but as of late that night, no results had been provided to the Trojan coaches by Harrisburg.
DIVISION CHAMPIONS: The Greencastle-Antrim boys completed an unbeaten run through the Mid Penn Colonial Division in track & field, going 5-0 to capture the division championship.
It wasn't quite as clean for the girls - G-A, Shippensburg and Boiling Springs each finished 4-1 and will be tri-champions. See results below and summaries on GameTimePA.com.

Baseball
Shippensburg 6, James Buchanan 2: Putting up five runs in the third inning was more than enough for Shippensburg to defeat James Buchanan in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game. The Greyhounds (7-4, 3-2 MPC) were led by Teagan Staver, who allowed just five hits and struck out five batters. Nathan Holt and Matt Frick each had a pair of hits, while Frick drove in a pair of runs. Dylan Sanders had two hits for JB (5-6, 0-5 MPC).
Waynesboro 4, Big Spring 3: Brady Riddell belted a home run in the top of the eighth inning and Zac Kober had a clutch performance on the mound to lead the Indians (9-2, 4-1 MPC). Waynesboro trailed 2-0 in the fourth when Kober relieved with runners on second and third and got out of the jam. The only run he allowed came on a double steal in the bottom of the seventh. Waynesboro scored three in the fifth helped by Nick Irizarry’s double, an error and RBIs by Cody Cline and Francisco Maya.
Greencastle-Antrim 7, Boiling Springs 0: Greencastle remained undefeated with a big MPC win to kick off a busy week. Derek Measell threw six shutout innings, all the while striking out 11 batters. Measell has struck out 22 batters in his last 13 innings of work for Greencastle (8-0, 4-0 MPC).
“Derek was phenomenal, and we expect him to be,” Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said. “We have nine games in five days, in a perfect world we would let him pitch the whole game, but he threw great and we got to keep his pitch count low.”
Southern Fulton 3, Chestnut Ridge 0: Southern Fulton avenged its only loss of the season, blanking Chestnut Ridge in Sideling Hill action. Trent Rider fired a two-hitter and struck out nine en route to the victory. Zach Clark led the Indians (9-1, 9-1 SHL) with two singles, while Rider helped his own cause with a run and an RBI.
"This was another complete effort offensively and defensively, which is what you need to prevail against good baseball teams," SF coach Dustin Fischer said.
Forbes Road 3, McConnellsburg 2: Forbes Road scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal an SHL/ICC victory from McConnellsburg. Despite notching 10 hits compared to just five for the Cardinals (7-4, 7-3 SHL/ICC), McConnellsburg simply couldn’t push enough runs through. Matt Huston led the Spartans (2-10, 2-8 SHL, 2-7 ICC) by going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases. Logan Little and Justin Welsh each had a pair of hits. For Forbes Road, Grayson Hall led the way with two singles, and he and Brycen Hohman combined to strike out nine.
Grace Academy 26, Shalom Christian 4: Colby Maun and Brady Bakner each had pair of hits for Shalom (5-6, 4-4 MDCC) in a four-inning loss to Grace Academy. Maun scored three of the Flames’ four runs.
Softball
Greencastle-Antrim 20, Boiling Springs 2: The Blue Devils got back on track with a big win over Boiling Springs as Ally Brown hurled a three-hitter. Alison Shockey and Olivia Remenick were each 2-for-3 with four runs batted in for Greencastle (5-3, 3-2 MPC). Alicen Hoover had three RBIs and Ali Sherman and Brown each had three hits.
Chestnut Ridge 11, Southern Fulton 1: Southern Fulton managed only three hits in an SHL/ICC, five-inning loss to Chestnut Ridge. Shaye Smartt had a pair of hits for the Indians (3-8, 3-8 SHL).
Boys Track & Field
Greencastle-Antrim 112, Waynesboro 38: Greencastle (5-0, 5-0 MPC) captured the Colonial Division title by winning 14 of 18 events against ’Boro (2-3, 2-3 MPC). Liam Okal (100, 200) and Parker Campbell (shot put, discus) were double winners for the Blue Devils.Levi Moats won the pole vault for the Indians at 11-6.
Shippensburg 121, Big Spring 29: Ship won all but two events to swamp the rival Bulldogs. For the Greyhounds (3-2, 3-2 MPC), Taha Shamshudin captured the 110 and 300 hurdles and was on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Also for Shippensburg, Cody Gustafson won the long and triple jumps.
Boiling Springs 99, James Buchanan 51: The Rockets (1-4, 1-4 MPC) swept the 110 high hurdles with Clay Ziemba first in 16.30, followed by Jae-Lin Carmack and Brian McCauley. Other JB winners were Clayton Bendell (high jump, 5-10) and Kenneth Gordon (discus, 120-04).
Girls Track & Field
Greencastle-Antrim 91, Waynesboro 59: The Blue Devils (4-1, 4-1 MPC) captured 11 individual wins, plus all three relays to put away Waynesboro (1-4, 1-4 MPC). For G-A, Jenae Faulkner took first in the shot put and discus and was second in the javelin and triple jump. The Maidens got a pair of wins from Madeline Spears (long and triple jumps).
Shippensburg 82, Big Spring 68: The Lady Hounds ran their record to 4-1 (4-1 MPC) by thumping Big Spring. Natalie Nye won the pole vault and 800 and ran on the 4x400 relay for Ship. Ally Ocker took the shot put and discus and Sarah Strohm was a winner in the triple and long jumps.
Boiling Springs 85, James Buchanan 65: JB collected seven first places, but fell to the Bubblers. Hailey Alger highlighted the day by breaking the Rockets' school record in the pole vault, clearing 10-0. Mickey Heinbaugh won the long and triples jumps, and other winners were Brianna Cook (100), Cassidy Martin (high jump), Siara Gossert (javelin) and the 4x100 relay team of Cook, Kylie Fogal, Tristen Amsley and Alger.
Girls Lacrosse
Northern York 13, Chambersburg 9: The Trojans held a 3-1 lead early in the game, but after a 30-minute weather delay, Northern took control and led 9-5 at halftime. Chambersburg outscored the Polar Bears 5-4 in the second half. Liza Ernst scored four goals for the Trojans (2-9, 1-7 MPC), Kendyl Stewart and Hannah Raines each had two and Cameron Stouffer had a goal and an assist.
“We have been forced to move players around due to injuries,” Trojan coach Katie Feairheller said. “Jordyn Amsley did a great job playing midfield. She’s a first-year player with a lot of potential.”
Boys Lacrosse
Northern York 18, Chambersburg 3: The Polar Bears led 12-1 by halftime against the Trojans (1-11, 1-8 MPC). For Chambersburg, Brandin Cosey scored two goals and Riley Ocker had the other, and Clayton Schellhase made 11 saves. Greg Patti racked up seven goals for Northern.
Boys Tennis
New Oxford 5, Chambersburg 0: The Colonials blanked Chambersburg (3-10), but had to win a couple of close matches to do so. At No. 2, Naushair Hussain fell 3-6, 6-7 (1-7) to Josiah Forry, and at No. 2 doubles, Josh Muldowney and Derek Briggs dropped a tiebreaker, 10-5, after they split the first two sets.
Trojan coach Brad Hill said, “We played another excellent team today, and I have to credit to our guys. Most of the teams we’ve played have had significantly more experience, but the guys have maintained excellent attitudes and they’ve really improved.”
State College 5, Mercersburg Academy 2: Elliot Hicks and the No. 3 doubles team of Dylan Hoang and Merle Thorpe were the only victors for Mercersburg (4-3) in a non-league loss.
Girls Soccer
Shalom Christian 3, Grace Academy 1: The Flames raised their record to 8-1 (7-1 MDCC) with a win over the Knights, thanks to the scoring prowess of Lexy Poe, who tallied all three goals. Grace took a 1-0 lead three minutes in, but Poe tied it on a 30-yard direct kick. She scored the game-winner with 10 minutes left in the game and added an insurance goal three minutes later.
