H.S. Highlights: Trojan boys lacrosse makes strides
The Chambersburg boys lacrosse team dropped an 18-9 Mid Penn decision to Carlisle on Thursday night at Trojan Stadium, but Trojan coach Paul Flohr was happy with his young team.
“Tonight it finally looked like we knew what we were doing,” Flohr said. “Haden Ocker did not play like a freshman tonight (5 goals, 1 assist); it may have been his coming out party.”
Flohr was also happy that Chambersburg (1-9, 1-6 MPC) won 50 percent of the faceoffs, with Cedric Adams and Devin Ditzler doing the work.
“That’s been our Achilles heel,” Flohr said. “That and ground balls, and we didn’t do that well on them tonight. And we just didn’t get enough shots.”
Brandin Cosey scored three goals in his first game back from an injury (he missed 5 games) and Jace Hopple had one. Goalie Clayton Schellhase made 12 saves.
“Clayton has made a ton of saves so far (118 for the season),” Flohr said. “We have to play zone and he faces a lot of shots from outside.”
STILL UNDEFEATED: It seems like it doesn’t matter who the Greencastle-Antrim baseball team puts on the mound, batters are sure to have a hard time. But pitching isn’t the only reason why the Blue Devils are still boasting an unbeaten record.
Thursday, Greencastle played a well-rounded game against Big Spring to lock in a 9-2 Mid Penn Colonial Division win. G-A starter Derek Measell struck out 11 batters, and had no walks in seven innings of work, all the while allowing just four hits and two earned runs.
“Measell had good fastball command and they struggled with his curve,” Greencaslte coach Eric Shaner said. “He did a really good job getting ahead all night.”
Matt Kline was a home run short of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-3 at the plate for the Blue Devils (7-0, 4-0 MPC).
Boys Volleyball
Chambersburg 3, State College 0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-15): Chambersburg recovered quickly from its first division loss by trouncing State College on the road Thursday. The Trojans (5-2, 5-1 MPC) got eight kills each from Dalton Strite and Riley Washington, 25 assists and two aces from Ian Patterson, and Will Gerhart (11) and Trey Stepler (6) led in digs.
Baseball
Shippensburg 5, Boiling Springs 3 (10): The Greyhounds won an MPC game over Boiling Springs in a 10-inning thriller when Nathan Holt belted a two-run home run in the top of the 10th. Teagan Staver earned the win through nine innings of work. He allowed just one earned run and struck out four. Bailey Custer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Shippensburg (3-4, 2-2 MPC).
Shalom Christian 6, Shenandoah Valley 4: Shalom Christian overcame a four-run deficit early to earn an MDCC victory over Shenandoah Valley. Colby Maun had 13 strikeouts and allowed just one earned run for Shalom (5-5, 4-3 MDCC).
Softball
Central Dauphin 6, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans were limited to just two hits and were handed their first loss of the season by the Rams. Chambersburg got a double by Caeley Etter and CD pitcher Sam Gress put five other runners on with two walks and three hit batters, but the Trojans couldn’t cash in.
“Their pitcher threw a great game,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “We ran into a good team that had a good day … it happens. We had two bad errors in the third inning when they got ahead and we haven’t been doing that. We’ll just see how we rebound from this.”
Shippensburg 10, Boiling Springs 0: Taylor Davidson limited the Bubblers to just one hit in five innings and struck out eight in a shutout for the Lady Hounds. Courtney Coy was the only player for Ship (6-2, 3-1 MPC) with two hits, and Morgan Fetter produced three RBIs.
Big Spring 20, Greencastle-Antrim 5: Greencastle could not catch up to Big Spring in an MPC loss, as the Bulldogs continued to rack up runs late. Big Spring knocked out 17 hits, while limiting the Lady Blue Devils to just eight. Alicen Hoover went 3-for-3 with a double for Greencastle (4-3, 2-2 MPC).
“For how well we have been playing, I did not see this coming,” Greencastle coach Mark DeCari said. “Our girls were focused (coming in), but Big Spring hit the ball well and they took us right out of our game. Every time we turned the corner they would put the ball in play and extend the lead.”
Mercersburg Academy 14, McConnellsburg 7: Mercersburg was a hitting machine, racking up 22 hits in a non-league win over McConnellsburg. Maya Miller finished 5-for-5 for the Blue Storm (2-5), who had six doubles. Bridgette Ritchey smacked a double for the Spartans (2-9).
Girls Lacrosse
Carlisle 17, Chambersburg 7: The Carlisle girls lacrosse team went on a scoring streak in the second half of an MPC game to take down the Trojans 17-7, despite being tied 6-6 at the half. Chambersburg was missing two top starters due to illness and injuries. Avery Rife had a hat trick for the Trojans (1-8, 1-6 MPC) and Liza Ernst had two goals and an assist.
“It would have been a completely different game if everyone was at 100 percent,” Chambersburg coach Katie Feairheller said.
Girls soccer
Shalom Christian 3, Shenandoah Valley 2 (OT): Shalom let a two-goal lead slip in the second half as Shenandoah Valley forced overtime in an MDCC matchup, but Sarah Priest scored the game-winning goal five minutes into the overtime period to capture the win. Lexy Poe had the assist on the game winner, and also scored the first goal of the game four minutes in. Priest finished the game with two goals. Kylie Eby had 17 saves for Shalom (7-1, 5-1 MDCC).
Girls Track & Field
McConnellsburg goes 1-1 : The Spartans (5-5, 4-3 ICC) earned a 91-58 victory over West Branch, but fell to Bellwood-Antis, 99-51. McKenzie Gelvin continued her remarkable season with four individual wins - 100 (12.8), 200 (27.0), 400 (52.9) and long jump (16-8.25).
Boys Track & Field
McConnellsburg splits tri-meet: Bellwood-Antis handed the Spartans their first loss of the season (96-54), but McConnellsburg (10-1, 6-1 ICC) defeated West Branch 113-54. Connor Johnson (shot put, discus) and Josh Booth (110, 300 hurdles) each picked up a pair of firsts.
