H.S. Highlights: SF's Lakyn Morton hits big


Lakyn Morton led the Southern Fulton softball team in a hit parade, Wednesday, as the Indians claimed a 16-9 Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference victory over Forbes Road, racking up 17 hits in the win.

Morton went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, and Victoria Barmard had four RBIs while going 2-for-5. Courtney Barton also went 3-for-4, knocking in two runs for the Indians (2-4, 2-4 SHL/ICC).

FR coach Pete Hall said, "Southern Fulton did a great job swinging the bats and we just couldn't score with them."

Courtney Schoen broke a sweat in the circle and at the plate for Forbes Road (2-7, 2-7 SHL, 2-6 ICC). She pitched a complete game, and struck out five. She also went 2-for-4 batting and brought in three runs.

Baseball 

Southern Fulton 8, Forbes Road 0: Southern Fulton used its talent at every position to lock up a SHL/ICC victory over Forbes Road, starting with the team's ace on the mound. Trent Rider threw the complete game shutout, striking out seven batters and allowing just four hits. Zach Clark went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

“Tonight was probably our best overall game of the season,” Southern Fulton coach Dustin Fischer said. “Our hitting, pitching and fielding did exactly what they needed to.”

The Indians (8-1, 8-1 SHL, 8-0 ICC) did not commit an error. The Cardinals are 5-4 (5-4 SHL, 5-3 ICC).

Mercersburg 9, Washington 7: It was a close one for Mercersburg Academy, which allowed Washington to score six runs in the top of the sixth as the Patriots made a run late in the game. The Blue Storm (12-3) scored in each inning except for the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Thomas went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Northern Bedford 7, Fannett-Metal 4: Fannett-Metal came out flat in a SHL/ICC loss to Northern Bedford.  The Tigers (3-7, 2-7 SHL, 2-7 ICC) registered three hits, all singles, while Northern Bedford knocked out nine hits, including three triples.

"Our defense started out a little sloppy," Fannett-Metal coach Jamie Funk said. "We allowed NBC to put a few runs on the board in early innings. Our guys were flat and it stayed like that throughout the game."

Softball

Northern Bedford 8, Fannett-Metal 3: Northern Bedford scored six runs in the final two innings to capture an SHL/ICC victory over Fannett-Metal. Emily Metcalfe drove in two of the three runs for the Tigers (6-5, 4-5 SHL, 4-4 ICC).

Boys Tennis

Cumberland Valley 5, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans (3-8, 0-5 MPC) couldn’t get much going against the Eagles - CV won all 5 matches in straight sets. At No. 2 singles, Chambersburg’s Naushair Hussain won four points, and the No. 1 doubles team of Aaron and Danny Muldowney picked up five points.

James Buchanan 4, Bishop McDevitt 1: James Buchanan swept singles play in a 4-1 MPC victory over Bishop McDevitt. Hunter Sowers won his No. 3 singles match for the Rockets (12-3, 7-3 MPC) with a pair of 6-0 wins. No. 1 doubles pair Josh Summers and Micah Wise won in three sets, including a 6-4 decision in the final set.

Girls lacrosse

St. James 16, Mercersburg Academy 3: Mercersburg dropped an IPSL game to St. James. Amanda Broyles had two goals for the Blue Storm (1-6, 0-2 IPSL).
