H.S. Highlights: Carl Potter leads SF to wild win
Coach Dustin Fischer summed up Southern Fulton's baseball game versus Southern Huntingdon in a few brief words.
"It was not a good game for someone with nerve issues to watch," he said.
The Indians pushed through a run in the top of the eighth inning and held on for a 5-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Southern Fulton was tied 4-4 after having just seen a 4-1 lead disappear. The Indians (3-1, 3-1 SHL, 3-0 ICC) gave up three unearned runs in the sixth inning. But they weren’t about to let that happen again.
Southern Huntingdon got a pair into scoring position with no outs before attempting a suicide squeeze. SF tossed the runner out at home but the Rockets still had runners at first and third. The next batter hit a groundball to pitcher Carl Potter, who allowed him to get to first on a fielder’s choice. But then Potter struck out a Southern Huntingdon batter on a full count before inducing a fly out to centerfield.
“Even if we had’ve lost after that, I couldn’t have been upset,” Fischer said. “It is so rare that you have runners at second and third with no outs and don’t score. It was ridiculous.”
But Southern Fulton gave Fischer something more to celebrate.
Potter led off the top of the eighth with a single and moved to second on a Tyler Unger sacrifice bunt. An error was made on a ball hit by Kyle Smith, and Potter motored around the bases for the game-winning run.
Potter finished 4-for-4, had three RBIs and earned the win on the mound by throwing 2 ⅓ scoreless innings.

Shippensburg 14, Milton Hershey 0: Teagan Staver allowed only one hit in five innings and the bottom of the Greyhounds’ lineup made a statement in a non-league win over Milton Hershey. Staver walked none and struck out seven. No. 8 hitter Nathan Holt was 2-for-3 and 3 RBIs and No. 9 Adam Maring was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI’s and both had doubles.
Chestnut Ridge 11, McConnellsburg 6: Chestnut Ridge scored early and often, defeating McConnellsburg in SHL action. Quintin Miller went 2-for-2 for the Spartans (2-2, 2-2 SHL) and hit McConnellsburg’s first home run of the season.
Everett 6, Fannett-Metal 5: Fannett-Metal gave up five unearned runs and suffered a SHL/ICC loss at the hands of Everett. Cole Funk and Hunter Kann each swiped a pair of bases for the Tigers (0-4, 0-4 SHL, 0-3 ICC).
“Freshman pitcher Kyler Goshorn threw a great game for us today, and we just couldn’t back him up,” F-M coach Jamie Funk said.

Shippensburg 15, Milton Hershey 10: It took the Lady Hounds (2-0) only 4 innings to blank the Spartans in a non-league game. Taylor Davidson allowed only one hit to pick up the victory. Amber Orndorff was 3-for-3 with a double, scored 3 runs and drove in 3, Ashley Macedo was 2-for-4 and scored 4 times, Sami Barmont hit a 2-run double and Maddie Miller also doubled.
Chestnut Ridge 11, McConnellsburg 1: The Spartans (2-4, 1-3 SHL) scored a run on Madison Koontz’s RBI single in the top of the first, then it was all Chestnut Ridge, who ended the game with five runs in the fifth.
Southern Huntingdon 8, Southern Fulton 2: Jessie Covalt and Lakyn Morton each had a pair of hits for Southern Fulton (0-3, 0-3 SHL/ICC) in a loss to Southern Huntingdon. Covalt had an RBI, and Morton scored once.
Everett 2, Fannett-Metal 1: The Warriors’ Katie Morral threw a 5-hitter with 11 strikeouts to hold off Fannett-Metal. Makayla O’Donel singled and scored for the Tigers (3-3, 1-3 SHL, 1-2 ICC) in the top of the first inning.
Boys tennis
Northern York 4, Chambersburg 1: Jay Padalia captured a hard-earned win at No. 1 singles, but that was all the Trojans (2-2) could muster in a non-league loss to the Polar Bears. Northern’s Dylan Krause won 6-2 in the first set, but Padalia rallied to take 6-3, 6-4 wins in the next two sets.
