H.S. Highlights: Trojans pleased after loss to Herd

Another pair of losses were put in the books for Chambersburg’s track & field teams on Tuesday, but the Trojans didn’t walk away from Carlisle too disappointed.

“I definitely felt a lot better about our team today,” Chambersburg boys coach Bob Walker said. “We did some really good things in a close loss.”

Chambersburg’s boys team suffered an 80-70 loss, while the girls were defeated 89-61 by the Thundering Herd in Mid Penn Commonwealth Division action. Both teams are now 0-2 (0-2 MPC).

Christian Ortiz was a big standout for the boys. Top sprinter Kory Harris was absent due to a violation of team rules, and Ortiz stepped right in to replace him. He was second in both the 100 and the 200, and had a six-inch personal record in the high jump, clearing 5-10 for second place.

Ortiz was also the second leg of the winning 4x100 relay team, which earned a victory despite having two substitutes.

Walker was also impressed with the work of Andrew Feldman, who placed third in the 3,200.

“It’s not often that you talk about third places, but Andrew and the kid he was racing passed each other three or four times on the final lap,” Walker said. “He showed great heart in that race. That’s what we need all our guys to start doing.”

On the girls side, Chambersburg had a number of fine performances, but had only six victories to show for it.

“We actually had a good meet - it was much better than Cumberland Valley,” Trojan girls coach Chris Monheim said. “Unfortunately, it still ended in a loss tonight, but I was pleased with most of what I saw. We had some great performances that didn’t get us wins.”

For instance, distance runner Abby Yourkavitch had a personal best in the mile, and it was still good enough for just second place.

Reagan Winebrenner had a standout day, picking up victories in the shot put and the discus, and a victory by Mathia McKay in the javelin allowed Chambersburg to sweep the throws.

The Trojans also got a surprising 1-2 punch out of freshman Sydnie Gilbert and Caroline Hance, who finished the 100 hurdles in 17.4 and 17.5 seconds, respectively.

VICTORY AT LAST

For the first time since 2014, Waynesboro's girls track & field team put a mark in the win column.

The Maidens swept three different events and defeated James Buchanan, 88-62, in Mid Penn Colonial Division action.

Virginia Cooley had a hand in a pair of victories - individually, she won the 800 (2:52.30) and was the anchor leg of the winning 4x800, which finished in 11:11. Cooley also placed second in the 1600 (6:21.80), clocking in behind only teammate Lindsey Bricker (6:20.90).

The shot put, 800 and high jumps were the best events for the Maidens (1-1, 1-1 MPC). Taliyah Capps led the shot with a mark of 28-11.5, and Ana Cuka cleared 4-8 to take first in the high jump.

For James Buchanan (0-1, 0-1 MPC), Brianna Cook won the 100 and 200 dashes.

WALKING PROBLEM

Walks continue to be an issue for the Chambersburg baseball team.

The Trojans (1-3, 1-2 MPC) were defeated 9-5 by Cumberland Valley (2-2, 1-2 MPC) on Tuesday thanks to a four-run bottom of the sixth by the Eagles that was fueled by three walks. With two outs and the bases loaded thanks to three walks by reliever Chance McClure, Drew Baughman doubled to give CV the lead for good.

“We were right there and couldn’t get it done,” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “Those walks came back to hurt us again.”

Carlin Christian had two doubles and an RBI in three at-bats, Kevin Carbaugh was 2-for-3 and Manning Brookens had a pair of runs batted in for Chambersburg.

SCORES

Baseball

McConnellsburg 10, Tussey Mountain 0 (5): Six walks and an error helped McConnellsburg earn an SHL/ICC victory over Tussey Mountain. Landon Richards led the Spartans (2-1, 2-1 SHL/ICC) with a pair of hits.

Forbes Road 6, Everett 3: Everett put up three runs in the top of the seventh, but Forbes Road held off the Warriors for a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference victory.

Brycen Hohman (6 innings) and Weylin Mitchell (save) combined for a one-hitter, and the Cardinals (3-1, 3-1 SHL/ICC) gave them enough run support to ensure the win. Hohman was also 3-for-4.

Softball

Everett 11, Forbes Road 4: Heading into the fifth inning, Forbes Road led by a run, but then Everett exploded for seven runs in the top of the frame to claim a SHL/ICC victory. Malea Truax had two singles for the Cardinals (1-3, 1-3 SHL/ICC).

Tussey Mountain 9, McConnellsburg 4: McConnellsburg scored four runs in the first two innings combined, but was shut out the rest of the way in SHL/ICC loss to Tussey Mountain. Madison Koontz and Tara Cutchall each had a pair of hits for the Spartans (2-3, 1-2 SHL/ICC).

Girls track & field

Conemaugh Twp. 84, McConnellsburg 66; Northern Bedford 87, McConnellsburg 63: McKenzie Gelvin was a three-event winner, but it wasn’t enough to help McConnellsburg to victory. Gelvin won all three sprints, besting the runner up in the 400 by more than five seconds.

Southern Fulton 83, Southern Huntingdon 67; So. Fulton 83, Everett 67: Emily Bradshaw earned two firsts for the Indians (4-1, 2-0 ICC), the 1600 and 3200 runs. Celina Merchant took the 300 hurdles and anchored the winning 4x400 relay team.

Girls lacrosse

Hershey 17, Chambersburg 6: Hannah Raines and Liza Ernst had a pair of goals for Chambersburg, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Hershey in a Mid Penn Conference game.

“Our defense came out strong,” Trojan coach Katie Feairheller said. “Madison Schmus, Mackenzie Miller, Beatrice Schellhase and Rachel Dusman did a great job holding and defending Hershey’s attackers. … Unfortunately, our attack was not able to capitalize.”

The midfield had a strong day for Chambersburg (0-3, 0-2 MPC), winning seven draw controls, and Micaela Champion had seven saves in net.

“Micaela Champion did a fantastic job in goal as a beginner goalie,” Feairheller said. “She will certainly be an asset in the future, especially as she gets some more goalie experience.”

Sidwell Friends 16, Mercersburg Academy 6: Elizabeth Fitzgerald notched a hat trick for Mercersburg (1-2) in a non-league loss.

Boys volleyball

Boys tennis

James Buchanan 5, Bishop McDevitt 0: The undefeated streak continues for James Buchanan, which claimed a shutout of Bishop McDevitt. Hunter Sowers was the most dominating for the Rockets (9-0, 5-0 MPC); he didn’t lose a single game at No. 3 singles.
