Chambersburg places third at opening tournament

The Chambersburg boys volleyball team placed third at the Hempfield Tournament to kick off the 2016 season.

The Trojans completed pool play with a 6-2 record after splitting sets with Hershey and Palmyra, and finished playoffs 3-1 after being handed a narrow 25-21 loss to perennial powerhouse Hempfield.

"We started the day very sluggish and very inconsistent. As the day went, we showed great improvements," Chambersburg coach Marta Cummings said. "I just would have liked to see us start with more confidence earlier in the day to possibly be at a higher level of play by the end of the tournament. But overall, it was a good effort for our first weekend of tournament play and a good baseline to start with."

Dalton Strite led Chambersburg with 30 total kills, while Will Gerhart tallied 41 digs and 42 service points, including team-leading eight aces.

SCORES

Boys tennis

Mercersburg 13, St. James 2: Mercersburg Academy kicked off the season with a big Independent Parochial School League victory over St. James.

The most challenging victory for the Blue Storm (1-0, 1-0 IPSL) came at No. 8 singles, where Merle Thorpe outlasted Jacob Yang, 6-4, 6-3. Elliot Hicks lost only one game in No. 1 singles and doubles combined.

"Today's conditions weren't like what we practiced this week," Mercersburg coach Eric Hicks said. "With almost no breeze, many players were able to get in a nice groove during their matches. There were a lot of unforced errors made today, but also a lot of good tennis played."

Baseball

Mercersburg 12-9, Linsly 2-8: Mercersburg Academy needed just five innings to defeat Linsly School in the first game of a doubleheader and narrowly squeaked out a victory in Game 2 to complete the non-league sweep. Beau Lowery and Jayvien Sandridge each had three hits apiece for the Blue Storm (4-1).

Boys lacrosse

Mercersburg 14, West Shore Warriors 8: Mercersburg Academy started the year with a non-league victory over the West Shore Warriors.
