Unsung hero steps up for Trojan win

The bottom of the seventh inning of a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division game between Chambersburg and Cedar Cliff was like a scene from a movie.

The home team was down by one, bases loaded, no outs, and slugger Leah Hunt up to bat.

Chambersburg didn't get the Hollywood ending it envisioned - but it did get the win. Hunt was walked to bring in the game-winning run in a 3-2 victory over the Colts, who handed Chambersburg its first loss of the season earlier this year.

Even though the Trojans didn't get a climactic walkoff hit, the blockbuster scene came earlier in the inning - with Hannah Weagley at the plate.

Weagley, the backup catcher, came in cold for Chambersburg in the fifth inning after starter Caeley Etter did not return after sustaining an injury in the fourth. And after an easy putout in her leadoff at bat in the bottom of the fifth, Weagley turned it around to kick things off the bottom of the seventh. She sent a nice line drive over the head of the Cedar Cliff first baseman into right field for a base hit, electrifying the Chambersburg bench.

"We have to give Hannah Weagley all the props in the world," Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. "She stepped in for Caeley and did a great job behind the plate, then battled with two strikes in the seventh to lead us off and got us going. After that we have the speed and the little rabbits on base to do some damage."

"I just knew that if I didn't get on base that there was a chance we couldn't score," Weagley said. "(Cedar Cliff pitcher Avery Winchell) was throwing outside, which is my least favorite pitch. After the first two strikes went by me, I watched and put my toes on the chalk to get that line drive.

"(Coming in) I was a little shaken up because Caeley got hurt, but I knew I had to step up for the team," Weagley said, "and I don't get many chances to so I was really excited."

Taylor Myers followed with a bunt single. A walk and the game-tying RBI single by Alexis Estep set the scene for Hunt.

Laken Myers had seven strikeouts through six innings, while Hunt earned the win with two Ks in the top of the seventh.

"We got a lot of excitement out of (Weagley's hit) and I also think it rattled the pitcher a little bit too so it helped us bring our intensity up again, and the walks definitely brought the pitcher down," Myers said.

Cedar Cliff tied the game in the top of the sixth with a leadoff triple by Jimiah McDonald, who came home on a throwing error in right field. But Myers stayed collected to end the inning with runners on second and third.
