Extra Innings: Trojans are F-F's only undefeated team

Chambersburg now stands alone.

After a pair of dominating victories this week, Chambersburg's softball team is now 7-0. The Trojans are the only remaining unblemished softball team in the area.

On Tuesday, Chambersburg defeated Cedar Cliff, 18-5. It followed that with a six-inning shutout of Carlisle in Mid Penn Commonwealth Division action. The Trojans are in sole possession of first place in the division. State College sits in the No. 2 spot with a 5-1 MPC record - Chambersburg defeated State College, 8-1.

Greencastle-Antrim, Shippensburg and James Buchanan all suffered their first losses of the season this week.

Stunning finishes: After Greencastle fell to Waynesboro in a high-flying, 14-13 contest, the Blue Devils needed a spark.

They got it - in the form of back-to-back stunning victories.

On Thursday, G-A found itself back in the midst of a slugfest - this time with James Buchanan. Down 10-8 in the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Devils erupted in celebration when Ally Brown hit a home run with two runners on.

The very next day, Greencastle was on the winning side of a non-league game against then-undefeated Littlestown after Morgan Wagaman stole home in the top of the seventh inning.

"That's the second quality team we've beaten in a row," Greencastle coach Mark DeCarli said after beating L-town.

Wins like that may be even more of a momentum boost.

Runners galore: The James Buchanan at Greencastle-Antrim game Thursday was anything but a pitchers’ duel.

The Rockets had 15 hits and put 20 runners on base, and G-A countered with 16 hits and 21 runners in the 2 ½ hour contest. The Blue Devils scored at least one run in every inning and JB put up at least a run in five of the seven innings.

James Buchanan scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, the last two on Jenna Mongold’s clutch two-run single, to take a 10-8 lead.

JB assistant coach Tim Mongold said, “I thought for sure we’d be able to close them down there.”

But it felt like a game that would be won by the team batting last, and that’s exactly how it transpired.

Oops: Tuesday was not a good day for a pair of local District 5 teams.

McConnellsburg and Forbes Road both suffered mercy-rule losses, and there was one big reason why - errors. The Spartans had nine errors, topped by the Cardinals' 10.

"We just weren't playing," McConnellsburg coach Junior Swope said. "(Northern Bedford's McKenzie Eshelman) was a pretty good pitcher, but walks and errors didn't help a whole lot. They would've beaten us probably, but we could've made it interesting if we didn't give them all that."
