FAYETTEVILLE - Cold weather and chilling winds failed to cool down the hot streak of the Chambersburg softball team.

The Trojans throttled State College, 8-1, on Friday in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory that gives them a 5-0 start to the season.

Chambersburg (4-0 MPC) played well on both ends allowing only one run while keen eyes and timely hits allowed them to score eight of its own. The Trojans benefited from strong pitching by Sam Bender, who allowed just one run in six innings.

“We’re getting where we want to go,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said, “We got a nice lead that allowed us to get a lot of girls in. We knew with Sam on the mound, they weren’t going to score eight runs on us.”

Along with the solid pitching, the Trojans capitalized on a sloppy third inning by the Little Lions.

Wild pitches and errors plagued State College (3-1, 3-1 MPC) and opened the floodgates for Chambersburg, which rattled rattled off seven runs in a row on multiples singles and a triple by leftfielder Lexi Leedy. The rest of the game was a smooth stroll for the Trojans, with Bender making it to the sixth inning before Leah Hunt came in to finish the Lions off.

"Sam looked a little tired at the end so we decided to take her out," said Skultety, "When she's still in the game, and we're up 8-1 there's no point in leaving her in the game and risking her getting injured, even though she wanted to finish it herself."

The cold weather that has been lingering this spring may be affecting some teams, but it would be hard to tell from Chambersburg's season so far.

Even though the Trojans are undefeated, Skultety believes the warmer weather is just going to thaw out more potential hitting for his team.

"We're looking to be a great team and at the moment I think we're a good team, and I think the weather has a lot to do with it," he said. "I believe that once the weather warms up our batting is going to heat up, too, and after facing the top four teams in the conference, I think we're in a very good spot."
