It's one thing to start the season 4-0 with a pair of wins in the Mid Penn Commonwealth Division.

But add a narrow defeat of three-time defending division champ Cumberland Valley to the resume, and you really may be on to something.

That's exactly where Chambersburg's softball team stands after Tuesday, when it rallied in the bottom of the sixth to take down the Eagles, 4-3.

"Beating Cumberland Valley is huge," Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. "It lets us know where our program is at. But we're still not satisfied."

Not only was Cumberland Valley (3-1, 2-1 MPC) the three-time Commonwealth champ, it also appeared in the PIAA Class AAAA championship just one year ago.

Chambersburg starting pitcher Laken Myers said, "It's definitely a big advantage to us. That was a goal of ours, to beat those big teams, and we definitely did that today."

Although it was closer Leah Hunt who took the win Tuesday, Myers was certainly the star of the show.

In addition to holding the heavy-hitting Eagles to a mere five hits and three runs through five innings of work, Myers also delivered the game-winning hit.

Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Tara Harmon led off the frame with a single, and Hunt followed with a walk. Sammie Bender dropped a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position for Myers.

"Bunting our five-hole hitter? Probably a lot of people wouldn't do that," Skultety said. "But we had runners at first and second, and we trust our other players to step up and come through."

Myers came through big time. She sent a hard single to right field, giving both Harmon and Hunt time to cross home plate and putting the Trojans ahead for good.

"I think this is what (Commonwealth Division softball) is going to be like," CV coach Gregg Williams said. "It's gonna be a battle every game, but that's what we expect. Laken is tough, so I was happy with the way we battled with them. We knew they were going to be good."

They certainly didn't disappoint.
