SOFTBALL: Monday's roundup, 2 big innings lifts Shippensburg to victory

SHIPPENSBURG >> There wasn't much offense to speak of early in Monday's non-league softball game between Shippensburg and East Pennsboro.

But the Lady Hounds quickly got things going, scoring four runs in the third and sixth innings to claim an 8-2 victory.

"We started a little slow tonight, and our defense was shaky early, but we made the most of the sixth to put the game a way," Ship coach Mike Peters said. "We had to manufacture a few runs, and Maddie Miller had a nice night at the plate. Each game is important, and we only have two left to secure a spot in the (District 3 Class) AAAA playoffs."

Miller finished the night by going 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI for the Hounds (13-5). Kayla Carbaugh, Morgan Fetter and Courtney Coy each had a pair of hits.

Coy earned the win by throwing six innings. She allowed four hits and two runs, neither of which were earned. She walked three but struck out seven.

JAMES BUCHANAN 18, MCCONNELLSBURG 4 >> McConnellsburg walked 14 batters and had five errors, and James Buchanan cruised to a non-league victory.

"We should be able to play a little better defense this late in the season, but we're still young," McConnellsburg coach Junior Swope said. "We just have to take it one game at time and have fun."

For the Rockets (16-2), Carly Caron finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, and Taryn Miller finished 2-for-3 and also got the win on the mound. Abbie Doyka finished 2-for-3, and Jennae Piper was 2-for-4. For the Spartans (1-12), Madison Koontz was 2-for-3.
