SOFTBALL: Thursday's roundup, Shippensburg holds off Big Spring 8-7 even with only 8 players

SHIPPENSBURG >> It was not just another normal softball game played at Shippensburg on Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Hounds zipped out to an 8-0 lead over rival Big Spring, but had to play the final three and a half innings with only eight players and managed to close out an 8-7 Mid Penn Colonial Division victory with the tying run at third base.

"It was a good, gutsy win, and I'm so glad we were able to hang on," Ship coach Mike Peters said.

Shippensburg (7-4, 4-2 MPC) scored four runs in the first inning on six singles, by Lexi Wolfe, Kayla Carbaugh, Morgan Fetter, Nicole Baker, Taylor Davidson and Maddie Miller. In the second, the Lady Hounds added four more as Fetter doubled in a run and Courtney Coy walloped a three-run home run.

In the top of the fourth, still ahead 8-0, Peters decided to put in all of his bench players.

"We were hitting the ball so well and I thought we might 10-run them," Peters said.

However, a wind-blown fly ball to short left field caused a collision between leftfielder Coy and shortstop Baker.

"They were both lying there; Court got up and Nicole didn't," Peters said. "Her eye was cut and we delayed the game about 10 minutes to get her to the hospital. It turns out she fractured one of her small orbital bones, but she didn't have a concussion, so she'll be out at least a week or more."

Since Ship had used all of its subs, it had to play a man down. They decided to use two outfielders, in left-center and right-center.

Big Spring scored a run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth, and produced five straight singles in the top of the seventh to get to within 8-6. After two outs, an error let in the seventh run and left baserunners at first and third.

"Big Spring put balls in play where we weren't," Peters said. "But their No. 9 hitter was up and Court (Coy was now pitching) blew some pitches by her and then got her looking to end the game."

GREENCASTLE 17, WAYNESBORO 2 >> Greencastle-Antrim scored in all five innings and routed Waynesboro in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game.

Ally Brown tossed a five-hitter, with the only significant hit for the Maidens (1-11, 1-5 MPC) being a two-run home run for Nicole Kreimer in the fourth inning. Brown struck out six and walked none, while her defense made no errors behind her.

G-A coach Mark DeCarli said, "We played great offensively – we hit the ball really well. And I'm really proud of our defense for having no errors. We hope to continue that kind of defense. It was a great game all-around, probably the best game we've played this year."

Brown was also a terror at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple and six runs batted in. Also for the Blue Devils (8-2, 5-1 MPC), Morgan Wagaman was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, Brooke Zeger was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double and triple, and Alicen Hoover was 3-for-3.

JAMES BUCHANAN 13, BOILING SPRINGS 3 >> James Buchanan continued its roll through the Mid Penn Colonial Division with a five-inning victory over Boiling Springs.

The Rockets (10-0, 6-0 MPC) racked up 13 hits, including three from Charity Miller. Kayla Cummings had three RBIs, including a two-run double in the first inning.

"We did another nice job hitting up and down the lineup," JB coach Eric Reed said. "Nina (Shatzer) threw more pitches than what we would've liked to see her pitch, but she made some nice pitches when it counted."

Shatzer picked up her fifth win on the mound.
