SOFTBALL: Friday's roundup, Fannett-Metal earns 1st victory of the season

MCCONNELLSBURG >> Despite falling behind 7-1 after the first inning, Fannett-Metal's softball team picked up the pieces and rallied to earn its first win of the season on Friday.

The Tigers defeated McConnellsburg 18-9 in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game.

F-M coach Mike DeAngelo said, "After that first inning, we huddled and I told the girls that we knew we were better than that, and from that point on we outscored them 17-2."

The top hitters for the Tigers (1-9, 1-7 SHL, 1-6 ICC) were Makayla O'Donel (3-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Claudia Umbrell (3-for-5, 2 RBIs). Also, Becca Rotz was 2-for-3 with a trio of runs batted in and Melissa Zeger was 2-for-4.

"We had two starters out today, but that allows others to step up and show what they have to offer," DeAngelo said. "Our girls rose to the challenge and picked up a good team win."

The Spartans are 1-8 (1-6 SHL, 1-7 ICC).
