SOFTBALL: Tuesday's roundup, Waynesboro beat Boiling Springs for 1st victory

WAYNESBORO >> Waynesboro's softball team finally got into the win column Tuesday.

The Maidens used a solid offensive attack and a strong pitching performance from Alyssa Medina to pick up a 9-5 Mid Penn Colonial Division victory over Boiling Springs.

"We fielded a lot better, cut down on our errors and got timely hitting," Waynesboro coach Doug Stewart said. "Offensively, we got hitting throughout our entire lineup. But I'm mostly happy because we fielded 12 ground balls."

Waynesboro (1-7, 1-2 MPC) fell behind 3-0, but scored two in the second and one in the third to tie it up. The Maidens then followed with six in the fourth to open up a big lead.

Elizabeth Churchman finished 2-for-3, scored three times and drove in a run for Waynesboro, and Haily Stum had a hit and two RBIs. Medina gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits in six innings. She walked two and had two strikeouts.

JAMES BUCHANAN 10, BIG SPRING 3 >> It took a while to get going, but when it did, James Buchanan didn't let up in a Mid Penn Colonial Division win over Big Spring.

The Rockets (7-0, 3-0 MPC) didn't score until they got one in the third inning, and they followed up with three in the fourth and six in the sixth to put the game away.

"The girls did another good job hitting up and down the lineup," JB coach Eric Reed said. "Abbie Doyka came up with a big hit in the fourth inning to give us some breathing room."

Winning pitcher Taryn Miller got the fourth inning started for James Buchanan when she was intentionally walked with the bases loaded. Doyka, who finished 3-for-4, followed with a two-run single to put the Rockets up 4-0.

Nina Shatzer finished with two hits, including a two-run homer as part of JB's six-run sixth. Jennae Piper also had two hits, and Charity Miller finished with two RBIs. Taryn Miller was intentionally walked three times.
