LEWISBERRY >> Chambersburg's softball team started well and ended well Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans scored four runs in the first and final innings in order to secure an 8-1 victory over Red Land in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division game.

"We got off to a quick start again," Chambersburg co-coach Ted Bittinger said. "That's the last two games that we've been able to jump out like that."

Caeley Etter and Chelsea Sommerville got things started for the Trojans (5-3, 4-3 MPC) with back-to-back singles. Lily Nolan then drove in a run, and Tara Harmon hit a sacrifice fly to plate Sommerville. Alexis Shearer then drew a walk, and Leah Hunt came up with her second home run in as many games to quickly take a 4-0 lead. She now has four homers this season.

"It was a really good defensive game through the middle of the game," Bittinger said. "There was a couple of nice defensive plays for both teams – Lex Shearer made a nice running catch in centerfield, and there was a nice throw-out at third. But we were able to come back and get some insurance runs that took some of the air out of their sails."

Chambersburg also got a splendid pitching performance from Laken Myers. She allowed just three hits in the complete-game victory. She gave up only one earned run, struck out four and walked five.

"Laken did a really decent job through all seven innings," Bittinger said. "Two of the five walks came in the final inning, but her walks were scattered out, so having only three hits, it didn't hurt her any."

Etter and Sommerville both finished 2-for-4.
