SOFTBALL: Saturday's roundup, Greencastle falls to Cumberland Valley in CV Tournament final

NEW KINGSTOWN >> Cumberland Valley zipped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and was able to hang on to capture its own CV Classic championship with a 5-3 victory over Greencastle-Antrim in the final on Saturday afternoon.

In the first round, Greencastle crunched Dover, 9-1 and CV bested Waynesboro, 5-1. In the consolation game, the Maidens fell 10-5 to Dover.

"Overall, we did a good job in the tournament," G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. "Against Dover we pitched very well and played a great game. In the CV game, the offense and pitching were fine, but we had a lapse with the defense and made six errors."

In Game 1, Liz Ward handcuffed Dover, limiting the Eagles to just one hit and two walks while striking out six.

Holding a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Blue Devils cashed in for seven runs, with the highlight being a grand slam off the bat of Ally Brown. In addition to the homer, Brown slugged a pair of doubles, and Shayla Walck and Brooke Zeger both had a pair of hits for Greencastle (4-2), including a double each.

Against unbeaten CV (8-0), Morgan Wagaman was 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Devils' offense.

The Eagles got a four-hitter from Lauren Shaffer to defeat Waynesboro in the first round. Cayce Stover was 2-for-2 for the Maidens (0-7) and Abby Ebersole singled in their lone run.

No information was available on the Dover-Waynesboro game.

SHIPPENSBURG 4, CARLISLE 1 >> Lexi Wolfe made good use of her first start of the season, limiting Carlisle to just two hits in Shippensburg's non-league victory.

Wolfe struck out only one batter, but didn't walk any. The hits came in the second and seventh innings.

The Lady Hounds (5-1) scored three runs in the third inning when Madison Kline ripped a double with the bases loaded to bring them all home. In the fifth, Taylor Davidson hit a sacrifice fly to the score final run.

Ship coach Mike Peters said, "Lexi pitched very well and her defense played well behind her with some nice plays – notably an assist from Nicole Baker deep in the hole at shortstop that saved a run. Our bats were a little cold, but Maddie had a big double for us and we manufactured another run."
