Waynesboro girls capture 3rd straight Trojan Cup

Chambersburg's Trojan Cup Tournament has been very kind to the Waynesboro girls soccer team.

The event's third version was held Saturday at Trojan Stadium, and for the third time the Maidens carted home the championship trophy, this time with a 3-0 victory over James Buchanan in the final.

Skylar Lambert scored the first two goals for Waynesboro in the championship game, both times getting around the left side of the Rocket defense and finding the back of the net.

"When she she turns the corner like that, she is really dangerous," Maiden assistant coach Dave Reed said.

Taylor Clawson assisted on the second goal, then scored the game's final goal after a pass from Olivia Churchman.

Churchman was the heroine in her team's first game, a 1-0 overtime win over host Chambersburg. Just 45 seconds into overtime, Trojan goalkeeper Caitlin Masaberg moved laterally to try to get to a loose ball, but Waynesboro's Raven Green got there first and sent a cross in to Churchman, who scored into the open net.

In the previous two years, the Maidens beat the Trojans in penalty kicks, and in a 2-1 comeback victory.

Lambert said, "It's a big competition with Chambersburg. We lost to them in PKs in the summer league, so I'm glad we got that quick goal in overtime."

Also in the first round, James Buchanan spotted Gettysburg a 1-0 lead, then roared back to take a 4-1 victory. Mickey Heinbaugh knocked in the first two goals for the Rockets, while freshman Hannah Kimmel knocked in the two insurance goals.

In the final, the Rockets had a fair amount of possession, but couldn't turn that into quality scoring chances.

"We looked tired in the second game," JB coach Terry Appleby said. "We didn't possess the ball like we can."

Chambersburg came back to take third place, routing Gettysburg 5-0. Gabby Lecuona and Ashlynn Swanger each knocked in two goals and Brynn Vandegriff had a goal and an assist.

Trojan coach Ed Franchi said, "We had opportunities in the first game (Chambersburg outshot 'Boro 12-3), but most of them we hit right at their keeper (Madeline Spears). She didn't have to move an inch. I was pleased with the way we played overall - we strung together a good number of passes."
