Rocky start crushes Chambersburg boys lacrosse

You would expect the team that had to get up very early on a Saturday morning and make a long drive to play a boys lacrosse game might have a tendency to have a slow start.

Not so in the case of Selinsgrove.

The Seals jumped all over a sleepy Chambersburg team for the game's first seven goals and romped to a 16-4 non-league victory at Trojan Stadium.

"They had a two hour-plus bus ride to play a Saturday morning game, and we had Friday off (because of Color Day)," Trojan coach Paul Flohr said, "but we were the team going through the motions. A lack of effort and heart will kill you in any sport."

Selinsgrove (5-3) won the first four faceoffs and scored after each of them for a quick 4-0 lead, and led 5-0 after one quarter. Freshmen Joe Kahn (7 goals) and Charlie Hayes (4) each had a pair of goals in that span.

Selinsgrove coach Tom Garlock said, "I really wanted our team to come out hard and not let Chambersburg get into a comfort zone. They played us tough last year and we wanted to get ahead early."

Cedric Adams scored the first goal for Chambersburg (1-13) when an errant clear by the goalie went right to him near the goal. He also scored right out of the gate in the second half from out front to make the score 11-2, but the Seals retaliated with two goals by Kahn and two by Gabe Ludwig to take charge again. Selinsgrove was able to get open right in front of the net quite often.

Garlock said, "We have two freshmen up there (Kahn and Hayes) who have really helped the attack. Our offense played smoother today and was in synch. Our shooting was much better, too."

"We play a zone and that's supposed to make teams shoot from outside," Flohr said, "but they were getting guys open five-six yards right in front of (goalie) Clayton (Schellhase). When we get in a big hole early, we drop our heads. And when we can't win faceoffs and can't make clears, we end up playing defense 70 percent of the time and kids get exhausted."
