H.S. Highlights: Trojans, Hounds start season well
It was a pretty good day for local golfers when the Mid Penn Colonial Division kicked off its golf season Tuesday afternoon at Whitetail Golf Resort.
Chambersburg kept its long winning streak going, taking first place with a team score of 325, 18 strokes better than runner-up Northern York. The streak is now at 169 and counting.
James Buchanan senior Jacob Suder was second in the individual standings with a 6-over par 78, two strokes behind the medalist, Austin Schreffler of Northern.
The Trojans' Mary Kate Norcross was the top girls finisher with a 79, and that was good for a tie for third overall. It was the best round she's had in a high school match.
Finally, Shippensburg came in third with a team score of 363, edging Waynesboro by four strokes. With a 4-2 record, the Greyhounds are already close to matching last year's six wins for the season. The four scorers - Jim Smith (88), Dillon Labonte (90), Adam Maring (91) and Tanner Greenawalt (93) all improved on their scores from a year ago at Whitetail.
"I'm thrilled," Ship coach Brad Horgos said. "That's the best we've finished in four or five years. I was hoping we'd do better than last year, so I'm pleased finishing above .500."
The story for the Hounds was Smith, a senior. His 88 gave him a 10th-place finish. What's remarkable about that score is that as a freshman, Smith took 172 strokes to get around Whitetail.
Horgos said, "As a freshman, by being on the team he helped us keep a team, and now he's a captain. Before, he was just on the golf team and now he's a golfer."
For Chambersburg, Karsen Rush equaled Norcross's 79, Luke Ocker shot 81 and Grayson Hopple had 86.
Trojan coach Mark Yost said, "I'm pleased with the win and the kids were mostly happy. Mary Kate had a wonderful day."
"I was very happy - my best before today was an 82 at districts last year," said Norcross, who shot 89 on the same course last year. "I had been playing pretty well in our qualifiers. The course was dry today so we got some extra distance."
JB's Suders said, "I could have improved a little today, but I'm happy. Just a few minor mistakes. I thought the course played like two different courses today - the front had more wind and the greens were faster."
GIRLS TENNIS
Trinity 3, James Buchanan 2: The Rockets narrowly lost a Mid Penn Colonial Division match to start the season. Victors for James Buchanan were Meredyth Sanders at No. 2 singles, as well as the No. 1 doubles team of Abby Mackling and Megan Hoffeditz.
