District 3 golf: 4 area players advance to PIAA Eastern Regional

YORK >> Four Franklin County golfers have qualified for the PIAA Eastern Regional Golf Tournament, to be held Oct. 19 at Golden Oaks G.C. in Fleetwood.

After the second day of play Saturday in the District 3 Tournament at Briarwood G.C., three boys – Ian Patterson and Karsen Rush of Chambersburg and Nick Franki of Waynesboro – and one girl, Olivia Gardenhour of Waynesboro, emerged as qualifers.

Franki placed fourth the Class AAA boys field, putting up an even-par 72 to go along with his 74 on Friday. Franki was two strokes behind the winner, Guy Minkin of Central York, who shot 74 to hang on by one stroke.

The Indian senior was 3-over par on his front side, but posted three birdies, on Nos. 13, 16 and 17 to shoot 33 on the back.

Patterson, who was one stroke out of the lead after one day, shot 76 and finished in a tie for fifth. The senior's only birdie of the round came on No. 17.

Rush, a freshman, scored a birdie on each nine to shoot 75, two strokes higher than the first day.

Three other players who made the first-day cut, Chambersburg's Tom Shearer and Jordan Shaffer, and James Buchanan's Jacob Suder, did not finish in the top 16.

The top eight girls in Class AAA advanced, and Gardenhour was eighth. She had an up-and-down round that included three birdies (Nos. 6, 11 and 17), but also had a pair of triple bogeys that added up to an 84.

Chambersburg's Mary Kate Norcross picked up six strokes from Friday with an 82, but took 12th place, and Waynesboro's Erika Cauffman was 14th with an 83, seven shots better than Friday.
