H.S. golf: 9 area golfers advance in District 3 tournament

YORK >> Franklin County sent 12 qualifiers to the District 3 Golf Championships on Friday at Briarwood Golf Club and nine managed to make the cut and advance to final round play on Saturday.

For the boys, Chambersburg's Ian Patterson had the best round, shooting a 1-under par 71 at Briarwood East. He finished in a group of three players one stroke behind leader Gus Minkin of Central York.

Other boys moving on include Karsen Rush (73), Tom Shearer (75) and Jordan Shaffer (79) of Chambersburg, Jacob Suder (77) of James Buchanan and Nick Franki (74) of Waynesboro.

The top 28 and ties made the cut Friday. After play Saturday, the top 16 players qualify for the PIAA Eastern Regional Tournament at Golden Oaks in Fleetwood on Oct. 19.

Among area girls, the three who advanced were Mary Kate Norcross of Chambersburg (88) and Waynesboro's Olivia Gardenhour (80) and Erika Cauffman (90).

The top 15 girls from Friday will play on Saturday and the top eight advance to regionals.

Patterson shot his best score in high school competition with his 71, which included four birdies, on Nos. 1, 2, 10 and 17. On the par 5 second hole and on No. 17, he was close in two shots and got up and down for a birdie. He made an 8-foot putt for birdie on No. 1 and one a little shorter on No. 10.

"Nothing today was really great, but everything was working pretty good," Patterson said. "The big thing is I had no three-putts, which is good for me.

"It was a little windy today, but the course is in great shape, and it should be again tomorrow. I'll be playing in the final group, which is nice, and I'll just have to try to keep it going."

Rush would have been in red numbers, too, except for one blip – he carded a double bogey on the par 3 No. 14. Shearer equaled his best score of the season with his 75. Shaffer is one of nine golfers who shot 79, but he's only nine strokes behind the leader. He scored an eagle 3 on No. 17.

Chambersburg coach Mark Yost said, "I was pretty proud of all our kids today. I hope they can come back with a good round tomorrow."

JB's Suder also had an eagle, when he chipped in on No. 5.

Rocket coach Mark Wise said, "Jacob felt he could have played better. We're looking forward to tomorrow and see if we can't go a little lower and move on to regionals."

Wise was also marking for Franki's group.

"Nick played a little uneven in the beginning, but it was fun to watch his last five holes – he went birdie-birdie-par-eagle-par," Wise said.

Gardenhour is tied for seventh for the girls with her 80, which included a birdie on the par 4 No. 12 hole. Norcross scored a 42 on the front side and a 46 on the back nine.
