After earning a hard-fought, five-set victory just one night prior, Waynesboro used Wednesday night's girls volleyball match as a tune-up.

It didn't take long for the Maidens to show they were the better team against James Buchanan, racking up an 8-1 lead in the first set before winning the non-league match, 3-0. The Rockets got a bit better with time, especially defensively, but they couldn't keep up with Waynesboro's fast-paced and high-potent offense. JB lost 25-8, 25-14, 25-13.

"With three matches in three nights, it was definitely important to work some things out," Maidens coach Kim Saunders said. "With Greencastle coming (Thursday), we needed to iron some things out."

One of the biggest things Waynesboro (2-0) focused on was increasing its tempo. From the start, the Maidens came out firing and used a plethora of offensive weapons to gain a big lead early. Olivia Fogelsonger led 'Boro with 13 kills, Ciara Rosenberger followed with 11 and Grace Powell was right behind with nine.

"As a team, we were trying to push a quicker finish and focused on playing our game," Waynesboro setter Brooke Chandler said. "Whenever I'm in the front row, I always try to go to my biggest hitter. We're always looking for that big play."

JB just couldn't keep up.

"We were just a deer in headlights whenever we saw their hits," Rocket coach Tonya Miller said. "We practice for it, and we thought we were ready for it. But you could tell, the girls already looked flustered when they were out there on the court."

While Waynesboro's offense was nearly unstoppable, the Rocket offense just wasn't clicking. Tyana Quivers' five kills led the way.

"We weren't swinging," Miller said. "We can hit from anywhere on the court, but you can't free ball to Waynesboro. They're just going to put it right back down your throat, so we were just giving them too many easy opportunities."

And the Maidens seized every one.
