H.S. sports: MDCC playoffs: Shalom's Chase Martin scores hat trick in quarterfinal win over Heritage

MARION >> Shalom Christian locked in its first win of the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference playoffs Tuesday in a 6-1 victory over Heritage.

Junior Chase Martin had a hat trick and an assist for the Flames (13-4-1), who out-shot Heritage 32-3.

"It was a hard-fought game by both teams," Shalom coach Chris Lehman said. "Our defense played well once again and Chase (Martin) really had a big night for us."

Shalom earned just one save against Heritage, but goalkeeper Travis West did not stop the shot. Cyrus Lehman had the lone save for the Flames off a long shot made from midfield by Heritage. Lehman also had a goal and two assists. Jonah Stains and Peter Livermore also scored for the Flames.

SHALOM CHRISTIAN 3, BROADFORDING 1 >> It wasn't easy for Shalom Christian in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference quarterfinal against Broadfording, but the Flames had a strong defensive game and earned the victory.

Shalom will play in the semifinals on Saturday at Grace.

"Broadfording definitely gave us a run for our money tonight," Shalom coach Katie Gantz said. "Our girls can get quite lackadaisical sometimes, and Broadfording capitalized on that during the second and third set."

After winning the first two sets, 25-6 and 25-21, the Flames (15-2) were taken down, 25-20. They came back strong to complete the victory, 25-7.

Haley Bricker led a very well-rounded defense with 29 digs. Bethany Blank (19), Brooke Kuhns (19), Paige Hoover (14) and Lexy Poe (13) were all big contributors. Poe led the offense with 14 kills, and Bricker finished with 11 kills and eight service aces.

"However, the girls improved on their passing and hitting, keeping Calvary scrambling for balls and unable to get a good offense going. They played hard tonight and kept up their intensity."

Brianna Miley had 15 kills for the Blazers while floor captain Loryn Sanders had 28 assists, six aces and four kills against Calvary.
