GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Thursday's roundup, Chambersburg sweeps Carlisle in Mid Penn match
CARLISLE >> Chambersburg swept Carlisle in an important Mid Penn Commonwealth Division match Thursday.
After what girls volleyball coach Ty Frelin called an inconsistent match against Red Land on Tuesday, the Lady Trojans zoned in to take Thursday's win on the road.
"It was a typical Carlisle-Chambersburg match," Frelin said. "We came out of the gate really well in Sets 1 and 2. It was a dogfight the rest of the match but the girls were closing out when they had the opportunity late in the third set."
Chambersburg locked in the first set 25-18, but battled to earn wins in the second and third game, winning 25-23 and 28-26, respectively. The last time Chambersburg and Carlisle met, the Thundering Herd won 3-2 by just a two-point margin in each set.
Caitlin Vrabel led the Lady Trojans in kills, blocks and service points with 12, 4 and 10 respectively despite missing the part of the second set with an ankle injury.
Erin Lightfoot entered the match in Vrabel's absence, and Frelin said he was pleased with how younger girls stepped up to compete without Vrabel on the court. Vrabel returned to the match in the final set; Frelin said the injury was not serious.
"It was nice to see them have a good team win," Frelin said.
Danessa Martin led Chambersburg with 24 digs, followed closely by Kailey Layman with 23.

WAYNESBORO 3, SHIPPENSBURG 0 >> Waynesboro held Shippensburg to 11 points or fewer in all three sets of a Mid Penn Capital Division sweep.
"Tonight, all games go to Waynesboro," Ship coach Suwan Kongkeattikul said. "They were solid both offensively and defensively."
Ciara Rosenberger and Brycelin Spidel split 20 kills evenly to pace the Maidens (14-0, 9-0 MPC). Spidel also recorded five blocks. Jordan Stoops filled up the stat sheet with 28 assists, two digs, a kill and an ace.
For Shippensburg (2-9, 2-8 MPC), Cierra Noel was the biggest standout with two kills, two blocks and three digs.

JAMES BUCHANAN 3, WEST PERRY 1 >> Behind the strength of middle blocker Emma Wise, the Rockets earned a Mid Penn Capital Division victory over West Perry.
"We had our girl Emma step up huge today off the bench," JB coach Tonya Miller said. "Usually she plays in the back row and she was all over the place tonight. She was a game changer."
Wise had five kills and two blocks in the JB (5-6, 5-5 MPC) victory, while Tyana Quivers led the team with 14 kills. Erica Eberly also had nine kill, 15 digs and six aces.

BIG SPRING 3, GREENCASTLE 2 >> Greencastle-Antrim and Big Spring fought to the bitter end, but it was the Bulldogs that came out on top of a Mid Penn Capital Division match.
After winning the first set, the Blue Devils dropped the next two but came back to force a decisive fifth set by winning Set 4, 28-26. Big Spring won the fifth, 15-11.
Greencastle (8-6, 7-3 MPC) got a fine defensive game, led by Gabby Baughman with 20 digs. Madison Goodwin also had 10 digs.
Keri Gearhart was the offensive leader with 14 kills.

MCCONNELLSBURG 3, EVERETT 1 >> McConnellsburg earned a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference match over Everett in four sets, Thursday. The Warriors earned the win in the first set 25-18, but McConnellsburg took the final three 25-11, 25-9 and 25-21, respectively.
"We were just overall inconsistent, but we have to be pleased with the win in the end," Spartans coach Heidi Johnston said. "We didn't want to see it go to game five but we pulled it out. We cleaned up defensively to get the win so we have to be pleased overall."
Kacey Hann had eight kills and two blocks in the win while Carly Swope led the team in digs with 17 and had seven aces for the Spartans (9-2, 6-1 SHL, 5-0 ICC).

CHESTNUT RIDGE 3, FANNETT-METAL 0 >> It was tough for Fannett-Metal to get much offense going in a Sideling Hill League loss to Chestnut Ridge.
The Tigers (0-11, 0-7 SHL) managed 16 points in the first set, but were then held to 14 and 11 points in the next two, respectively.
"We are still improving and working off continuous injuries," F-M coach Keri Daniel said. "The girls work hard, but need to learn to talk. We are too quiet, and it really makes a difference. We haven't had much practice time between our games, but are still working hard for a win."
Kiana Patrick led the offense with three kills and a block. Patrick, Kassie Holtry and Allyson Hoffmann each had four digs.
