GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Saturday's roundup, Shalom Christian drops McConnellsburg in straight sets

MARION >> One-loss Shalom Christian hosted undefeated McConnellsburg on Saturday afternoon, and with the Spartans a bit short-handed, the Flames cruised to a 3-0 non-league girls volleyball sweep in their Homecoming match.

Without setter Lindsey Randler, McConnellsburg (7-1) had a rough time getting things going. Its kills leader, Kylie Keefer, had just five kills, and the Spartans' top two assist producers had just four apiece.

"It's a tough loss to a good team," McConnellsburg coach Heidi Johnston said. "Shalom is always very solid, but a big portion of our struggles today was because we didn't have our setter. Lindsey is like the quarterback of our team, and she also provides us with a lot of energy on the floor."

The Flames (10-1) controlled each set, winning each by nine or more points. They took at 25-16 victory in the first set before taking care of the final two, 25-15 each.

Shalom coach Katie Gantz said, "The girls had a great Homecoming game today. We recognized our seniors, Lexy Poe and Brooke Kuhns, and then we played some very solid volleyball."

For the Flames, Haley Bricker led with 11 kills and three blocks, and Poe had eight kills and two blocks. Kuhns added eight kills and 12 digs, and Kylie Eby had 30 assists and 11 digs.

For McConnellsburg, Tara Cutshaw led with nine digs and four assists, and Carly Swope had six digs and two aces.
