GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Saturday's roundup, Chambersburg places 2nd in Linganore Tournament

FREDERICK, MD. >> Chambersburg's girls volleyball team had an impressive day at the Linganore Tournament on Saturday.

The Trojans, who won the tournament a year ago, cruised through pool play with a perfect record and battled for a three-set victory in the semifinal, but they lost to Linganore in the final to finish second on the day.

Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said, "After our marathon match on Thursday (a 3-2 defeat to Carlisle), I think it was good to get back on the court. The girls played well and progressed as the day went on."

In pool play, the Trojans earned 2-0 sweeps of Oakdale, Mount Hebron, Frederick and Francis Scott Key. In the semifinals, they needed a third set to complete a 2-1 victory over Catoctin. But in the final, Chambersburg was swept 2-0 (25-20, 25-22) by the host team.

Caitlin Vrabel was named the Tournament MVP for the second straight year, and Lauren Ching was also named to the All-Tournament team.

"We had some girls do some very good things, and I was pleased with the overall outcome," Frelin said. "Now we just have to bounce back Monday and Tuesday and keep it going."

Vrabel finished with some gaudy stats for the Trojans. She racked up 39 kills, nine blocks, 25 service points, eight aces and eight digs. Ching totaled 103 assists and also had 17 digs and four blocks. Lauren Diller finished with 30 kills, and Cara Long had 28. Defensively, Danessa Martin had 39 digs, and Kailey Layman was right behind with 38.
