GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Tuesday's roundup, Chambersburg's serves mystify Mifflin County in opener
LEWISTOWN >> The start of the girls volleyball season for Chambersburg was a breeze on Tuesday evening – the Trojans blitzed Mifflin County 3-0 and allowed a total of only 19 points for the match.
Chambersburg won sets of 25-7, 25-6 and 25-6 for the Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory.
"The girls came out for their first game and served very well," Trojan coach Ty Frelin said. "We hit a lot of different serves, and did a nice job of moving the serves around. And they had trouble receiving those serves."
Megan Bard led in service points with 13 (6 aces), Rebecca Stewart (4) and Caitlin Vrabel (7) each had 12, and Denessa Martin (5) scored 11.
At the net, Cara Long led with nine kills and Vrabel and Lauren Diller each had six. Stewart made 28 assists and Martin (7) and Vrabel (6) led in digs.
The Trojans are hoping to get setter Lauren Ching back for Thursday's home match against Central Dauphin.

GREENCASTLE-ANTRIM 3, SHIPPENSBURG 0 >> Greencastle-Antrim opened up its season in fine fashion, downing Mid Penn Colonial Division foe Shippensburg in straight sets.
The Blue Devils (1-0, 1-0 MPC) took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-17 respectively. The Lady Hounds (0-1, 0-1 MPC) battled in the final set, but ultimately lost 25-23.
Keri Gearhart led Greencastle with eight kills, and Chle McKenzie had 19 assists. Gabby Baughman finished with 24 digs and four aces.

NORTHERN YORK 3, JAMES BUCHANAN 1 >> James Buchanan battled the entire evening, but Northern York pulled out the Mid Penn Colonial Division victory.
The Rockets (0-1, 0-1 MPC) were within five points in two of its three set losses, and they won the third set 25-23, but the Polar Bears answered in the fourth set with a 25-21 win to seal the victory.
JB coach Tonya Miller said, "We played hard and volleyed well against Northern tonight. We read their hitters to get the dig and set the ball up, but they had excellent hitters who found open spots."
Tyana Quivers led the Rockets with nine kills, and Kayla Cummings had 17 assists, 11 digs and six aces.

Ciara Rosenberger finished with 12 kills, Rachel Johnson had eight and Brycelin Spidel seven. Jordan Stoops added 38 assists, and Alyssa Taylor had 20 digs.

MERCERSBURG ACADEMY 3, FANNETT-METAL 0 >> Mercersburg Academy jumped on Fannett-Metal and never looked back in a straight-set, non-league victory as both teams opened their seasons.
The Blue Storm (1-0) controlled the first set 25-17, led by Tori Yoder and Mallory Sipes, who had four kills and three assists, respectively. In the second set, the Tigers (0-1) jumped out to an early lead, but Mercersburg battled back for a 25-22 win. The Storm then slammed the door with a 25-12 win in the final set.
Mercersburg coach Katie LaRue said, "The girls played hard and did some really nice things. I think we looked even better today than we have in practice the last week and a half."
For Fannett-Metal, Emily Metcalfe led the team with four kills and five assists, and Holtry had 12 service points and three aces.

The Blazers (1-3, 1-3 MDCC) battled in the final set to a 27-25 defeat, but Heritage dominated the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-15.
"We had another strong service game tonight," CVC coach Carole Rosenberry said. "Our passing game was pretty good, and we were able to get some kills tonight."
Brianna Miley and Harli Bergau both had five kills, and Loryn Sanders had 16 assists. Brianna Miley finished with seven aces.

The Flames (4-1, 4-1 MDCC) cruised through the first two sets 25-7, and took care of business in the third with a 25-10 victory.
Shalom coach Katie Gantz said, "The girls had a great match tonight. Their serving game was on point and they really weren't letting much of anything hit the floor."
Haley Bricker led the Flames with seven kills, and Brooke Kuhns finished with six kills, five digs and five aces. Kylie Eby had 23 assists.
