GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Friday's roundup, McConnellsburg opens with 3-0 win over Southern Fulton


WARFORDSBURG >> Southern Fulton made it interesting, especially in the second set, but McConnellsburg was up to the task Friday night and claimed a 3-0 Sideling Hill League girls volleyball victory to open the season for both teams.

"I thought it was a good season opener overall," Spartans coach Heidi Johnston said. "We got a good mix of leadership from the returning players and some younger talent stepping up. It was nice to be able to win in three."

Kylie Keefer led McConnellsburg (1-0) with eight kills, Lindsay Randler put up 19 assists and 11 digs, Kailey Dils had 14 digs and Aryanna Lupey had three aces.

For the Indians (1-0), Shaye Smart knocked down eight kills and Mikayla O'Neal produced nine service points and five aces.

SHALOM CHRISTIAN 3, CALVARY 1 >> Shalom Christian gutted out a long first set 27-25 and that led to a 3-1 Mason-Dixon Christian Conference victory over Calvary Christian on Friday.

"I'm proud of the girls tonight," Flames coach Katie Gantz said. "Despite a long drive and a very hot gym, they hung tough. Calvary is a scrappy team and they pushed us. I think our girls were a little surprised that a lot of their hits were dug back up and returned."

For Shalom (3-1, 3-1 MDCC), Haley Bricker had 14 kills and five blocks, Kylie Eby had 40 assists and 17 digs, Bethany Blank had 17 digs and Brooke Kuhns made 10 kills and four aces.

GRACE 3, CUMB. VALLEY CHRISTIAN 0 >> Grace Academy overcame a strong serving match by Cumberland Valley Christian and took a 3-0 Mason-Dixon Christian Conference victory Friday.

The Knights won sets of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23.

CV Christian coach Carole Rosenberry said, "We had a very strong service game tonight with only two service errors in the match, and our passing was pretty good. We just weren't able to get an offense going and that was costly."

For the Blazers (1-2, 1-2 MDCC), Brianna Miley had seven kills and three aces, Harli Bergau had five kills and three aces and Loryn Sanders had 12 assists.
