H.S. SPORTS: Shalom earns pair of big victories over CV Christian in girls volleyball, boys soccer

CHAMBERSBURG >> As Tuesday night's girls volleyball match progressed, Cumberland Valley Christian got better and better.

But it was too little, too late.

After Shalom Christian secured a dominating victory in the first set (25-8), the Flames held off CVC for a 3-0 win in Mason-Dixon Christian Conference action.

"Tonight was definitely a full team effort," Shalom coach Katie Gantz said. "However, the girls really stepped up their play at the net."

Lexy Poe led Shalom (2-1, 2-1 MDCC) both offensively and defensively. She smacked seven kills and had 12 digs. Brooke Kuhns was a force at the net with six kills and five blocks, while Haley Bricker had five kills and four blocks. Paige Hoover also finished with five kills.

CV Christian (1-1, 1-1 MDCC) scored only eight points in the opening set, but scored 17 and 20 in the last two, respectively. Brianna Miley led the attack with seven kills.

"Despite the loss, we still passed well and picked up a lot on defense," Blazers coach Carole Rosenberry said. "We just weren't able to get an effective offensive attack tonight, and that hurt us. Shalom has a strong team, and I believe we should've been able to challenge them a little more."

Boys soccer

SHALOM CHRISTIAN 5, CV CHRISTIAN 1 >> Jonah Stains and Cyrus Lehman were in the groove for Shalom Christian on Tuesday night in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference victory over Cumberland Valley Christian in boys soccer.

Stains had all five of the goals for the Flames (2-0-1, 2-0-1 MDCC), and Lehman set him up for four of those. Chase Martin also secured an assist.

"It was a good game, and both teams played hard," Shalom coach Chris Lehman said. "Our defense really stepped up and played well. Jonah Stains really had some nice finishes; he had a nice header off a corner kick from Cyrus. Overall, it was a great team effort."

Jackson Park scored the lone goal of the game for CV Christian (1-2, 1-1 MDCC) on an assist from Sterling Bard.

Blazers coach Stan Hott said, "We're young and still trying to figure some things out. When we had possession we controlled the ball pretty well. But we have a lot of inexperience in goal and that showed today. Christian (Hott) is doing the best he can."
