GIRLS SOCCER: Thursday's roundup, Chambersburg can't overcome deficit in loss to Cedar Cliff
CHAMBERSBURG >> Chambersburg's girls soccer team was shut out 4-0 by Cedar Cliff Thursday in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division game.
All of the action was in the first half as the Colts stacked the score thanks to corners and free kicks. Cedar Cliff netted two goals off corner attempts and another on a free kick in the first 40 minutes of play.
"We've done an exceptional job defending set pieces for most of the season," Chambersburg coach Eric Guyer said. "Ten corners are a lot to defend and we just didn't do a good job of staying with our marks through the entire play."
Chambersburg was out-shot 12-7, while goaltender Meg Cottingham defended 10 corner kicks. Chambersburg had just two corner kick attempts.
Guyer said he felt his team was fatigued after playing six games in nine days, plus having the added distraction of homecoming.
"I was pleased after we talked at halftime that the girls kept their composure and played hard the second half," he said. "They created some chances and held Cedar Cliff scoreless."

BOILING SPRINGS 5, SHIPPENSBURG 0 >> Shippensburg managed only three shots and suffered a tough loss at the hands of Boiling Springs in Mid Penn Colonial Division play.
"We gave up some ugly goals," Lady Hounds coach Mary Miller said. "We played decently but not one of our best games. We could have worked a little harder, but we had some field players step into roles tonight and shine."
Hannah Pletcher had a fine effort, picking up 11 saves for Ship (4-11, 2-7 MPC).

WAYNESBORO 6, BIG SPRING 1 >> After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Waynesboro's offense exploded in a Mid Penn Colonial Division victory over Big Spring.
The Maidens (12-3-1, 8-1-1 MPC) were led by Taylor Clawson, who scored twice. Kennedy Chandler and Katie Clawson both had a goal and an assist.

EVERETT 4, MCCONNELLSBURG 1 >> Everett scored three goals in the first half, and McConnellsburg never overcame it in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game.
"The first half killed us," Spartan coach Toby McGarvey said. "They outplayed us and outhustled us. We just couldn't stop them or shut them down, and they had a lot of speed working for them that somehow we weren't prepared for."
McConnellsburg (5-8, 3-2 SHL, 2-2 ICC) got more physical in the second half, but managed only one goal. Hannah McGarvey scored out of the gate with an assist from Alexis Mellott.
The Spartans had only six shots and three corner kicks.
