GIRLS SOCCER: Saturday's roundup, Chambersburg gets back on track by beating Carlisle

CARLISLE >> After an ugly defeat against Cumberland Valley on Thursday night, Chambersburg's girls soccer team was looking to bounce back on Saturday.

Isabella Weigel scored the only goal of the game to get the Trojans back on track in a 1-0 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division win over Carlisle.

Weigel put the Trojans (5-4-1, 4-3 MPC) on the board in the 32nd minute when she took on and beat three Carlisle defenders.

"Weigel did a great job of receiving and turning on the Carlisle defenders tonight and created several scoring chances," Chambersburg coach Eric Guyer said. "(Claire) Jacobs played another monster game in the midfield, and the freshman duo of (Lauren) Ocker and (Gabriella) Lecuona did well on defense in place of our injured seniors."

Chambersburg out-shot Carlisle 15-10, and keeper Megan Cottingham, who made six saves in goal, saved a header off a corner kick to prevent the tying goal late in the game.

The Lady Hounds (3-7) racked up 10 shots in the game, while the Mustangs had just three, but West Perry made one count on a goal in the 26th minute by Ericka Morgan.

"We played a solid game," Ship coach Mary Miller said. "We gave up a fluke goal in the first half, but we kept counter-attacking and getting shots, making runs and getting opportunities, but we just couldn't get anything to into the back of the net."

Rudy scored after assists by Alyssa Denkovich and Paige Johnson after the Indians went ahead on a penalty kick. In the second half, Johnson scored after a pass from Jordan Yeager to add some insurance for the Blue Devils (6-3-1).

G-A coach Greg Cole said, "It was nice to play someone we had not played since I've been here. We added them to the schedule, then found out they were 22-1-1 last year and made states. They controlled the pace of play early, but by about the 20th minute we started to play to feet, getting wide and possessing the ball. We are continuing to solidify our lineup; we just need more consistency."

We even had one close-in opportunity when it was still 1-0, but we somehow kicked a ball over the goal from two yards out when the goalie was behind us."
