GIRLS SOCCER: Thursday's roundup, Chambersburg has no answers for Cumberland Valley

CHAMBERSBURG >> Chambersburg, which had been playing well lately, did not have any answers for unbeaten Cumberland Valley on Thursday night in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division girls soccer game.

The Eagles (8-0, 6-0 MPC) put on a scoring clinic at Trojan Stadium and beat the Trojans 10-0.

"The girls attempted to execute our game plan and it didn't work," Chambersburg coach Eric Guyer said. "I was out-coached and didn't have the team prepared for who they faced tonight, so this result is on me."

Brice McInroy scored three times for CV and Jess Bail had a goal and two assists.

Goalkeepers Megan Cottingham (5) and Caitlin Masaberg (7) combined for 12 stops for the Trojans (4-4-1, 3-3 MPC).

Guyer said, "After the game got away from us, I was able to provide some valuable playing time for many of our JV players and they came in and showed great spirit in helping our starters get some much-needed rest.

"This game should not be a reflection on the body of work these girls have put in up to this point. This is a great group of young women and they'll bounce back and be ready to go for Saturday (at Carlisle)."

Although JB outshot Shippensburg 15-4, it wasn't until 3:12 remained in regulation that it finally got on the board, when Sydney Benedick's pass led to a tying goal by Madison Peck.

Ship coach Mary Miller said, "We played a solid 76 minutes of soccer, and it was probably one of our best all-around games. (Goalkeeper) Hannah Pletcher (8 saves) had a fantastic game to keep us strong in the back. We are making vast improvements as the season goes along."

Mellott scored twice in the first half and on her goal early in the latter half, Hannah McGarvey assisted. McGarvey then assisted a goal by McKenzi Garlock, and finished off the scoring by converting a penalty kick for the Spartans (3-5, 2-1 SHL, 1-1 ICC).

McConnellsburg coach Toby McGarvey said, "It was good to get a much-needed win. We played a real good second half and finally got some scoring – we definitely had better finishing. It was good to see the shots get past the goalkeeper."
