GIRLS SOCCER: Monday's roundup, Chambersburg takes rare win at Red Land

LEWISBERRY >> The Chambersburg girls soccer team continued its strong start on Monday afternoon by handing Mid Penn Commonwealth Division opponent Red Land a 3-1 defeat.

"Coming to Red Land in recent history hasn't always produced a result we left proud of," Trojan coach Eric Guyer said, "so it's great for the girls to be able to come here and get a victory."

Cirsten Kelly got Chambersburg (4-2-1, 3-1 MPC) on the board first, on a pass from Isabella Weigel, then the Patriots (2-3, 1-3 MPC) tied the game on Jamie Carlson's goal.

But 1:45 before the first half ended, Trojan freshman Gabriella Lecuona broke the tie when she collected a 50-50 ball near midfield, beat a defender and rifled a shot past Red Land goalkeeper Katie Korovac.

Guyer said, "Gabby did an outstanding job in her first varsity start, which ended up being on defense because of an injury to Liz Bishop. She and Lauren Ocker showed their speed today, and our midfield was able to possess the ball and work with our forwards to get some great scoring chances."

In the second half, a corner kick taken by Lecuona was knocked in by Cari Pasierb for a clinching goal.

"Although Izzy (Weigel) didn't score, she had several shots that were denied by nice saves from the Red Land keeper," Guyer said. "And she worked some nice combination passes with the midfielders."

Trojan keeper Megan Cottingham was responsible for nine saves.

JB out-shot the Spartans (2-5) 25-3, and McConnellsburg keeper Kellyn Perry was forced to make 23 saves in a gallant effort.

"Perry did well in the goal for them," Rockets coach Terry Appleby said. "She was bombarded and made some great saves. We dominated play and they packed it in. We had lots of opportunities; the one thing we were lacking was finishing, and that takes time to learn."

Nina Shatzer made three saves to send the Spartans to their third straight shutout defeat.
