GIRLS SOCCER: Thursday's roundup, McConnellsburg secures 2-0 victory over Mercersburg Academy

MERCERSBURG >> The same duo combined for both goals and the defense stood strong for McConnellsburg's girls soccer team on Thursday afternoon.

As a result, the Spartans captured their first win of the season, handing Mercersburg Academy a 2-0 defeat in the Blue Storm's season opener.

Alexis Mellott scored a goal in each half for the Spartans (1-2), and both were assisted by Michaela Kendall. Kellyn Perry made seven saves to preserve the shutout.

"I was really pleased with how the girls played today," McConnellsburg coach Toby McGarvey said. "They were patient on the ball and moved it around really well. It was a pretty evenly-played game. Perry and the defense did well and kept it organized."

Blue Storm coach Jason Bershatsky said, "It was a good, even game, but we're going to have to find ways to score. We did hit the crossbar twice, and did some things well, but they finished better."

C.J. Walker made five saves for Mercersburg (0-1).
