MCCONNELLSBURG >> James Buchanan scored a pair of first-half goals, then salted the game away with two late goals in a 4-1 non-league girls soccer victory Friday to open both teams' season.

Olivia Kipe scored less than two minutes in the game for the Rockets (1-0), and Mickey Heinbaugh made it 2-0 just before halftime. Both goals were assisted by Sydney Benedick.

Early in the second half, the Spartans got on the board when Hannah McGarvey curled a corner kick off the goalkeeper's hands and into the net.

"We had a couple of chances to make it 2-2 at that point," McConnellsburg coach Toby McGarvey said. "But I think toward the end we sort of got worn down."

James Buchanan got goals by Breanna Dukehart and Heinbaugh in the final eight minutes.

McGarvey said, "We played better in the second half. But JB controlled most of the game – when they got possession they moved it well. We did a lot of chasing at the end."
