Greencastle girls finish unbeaten in Colonial play

The Greencastle-Antrim girls basketball team wrapped up its Mid Penn Colonial Division play for the season with a 12-0 record by defeating the Waynesboro Maidens on Friday night, 51-45.

The Blue Devils (17-3) opened the game looking stagnant on both sides of the ball, but woke up in the second quarter after a 6-0 run gave the Maidens (13-7, 9-3 MPC) the lead. G-A went on a run of its own to end the second quarter, led by Jenay Faulkner, who finished with 25 points and six 3-pointers.

Faulkner finished through a hard foul that sent her to the floor and woke up something inside of her.

"That got her attention," Blue Devils coach Mike Rhine said, "She dialed it up there and she was tired tonight. That's hard guarding Cat Weber and then handling the ball and running the plays for us."

Faulkner then went on to hit a deep 3-pointer and converted on another and-one that gave Greencastle a one-point lead at the half.

The third quarter was rough for the Blue Devils as costly fouls sent one of their best defenders, Morgan Wagaman, to the bench with her fourth. With Wagaman out, the Maidens got to the line and eventually tied the score 32-32 going into the final quarter.

Weber had a solid game for Waynesboro, finishing with 17 points, while Olivia Gardenhour had 14, including the three free throws that knotted the score at 32.

Waynesboro continued to play aggressively in the fourth quarter, driving into the lane and drawing fouls. The Maidens' aggressiveness may have kept them in the game, but ultimately was a key part of their downfall.

"I thought we were a little bit too aggressive late in the game and started forcing shots," 'Boro coach Allison Steiger said, "and we started running out of juice at the end on defense a little bit. We were slow to get out to the shooters, like (Lydia) Crist, and the offense started getting out of whack at the end."

With the Waynesboro defense focused on Faulker in the closing minutes, Wagaman and sophomore Crist both hit two big 3-pointers to give Greencastle the lead and keep them ahead.

"It felt really good to hit those two threes because I was struggling in the beginning of the game," Crist said. "And I was putting my head down, trying to keep in the game and then I hit those two threes. It feels amazing."

Crist, Faulkner, and Wagaman finished with all but two of the Blue Devils' points, but the win was an entire team effort.

Rhine said, "Jenay was doing her thing again, but look at those shots down the stretch. Morgan hit two big ones, Lydia had one from each corner and Jordan Yeager had a huge offensive rebound for us. It was a good team effort."

The 12-0 sweep of the Colonial was the Blue Devils' third year of undefeated league play in the past four seasons. With Faulkner on the team, G-A has been a juggernaut in league play with a record of 47-1 with their only loss being last year's first game against Big Spring.
