District 3 girls: G-A claims 3rd place over Scouts

COLONIAL PARK -  After a tough loss in the District 3 Class AAA semifinals, the Greencastle-Antrim girls basketball team wanted to get back into rhythm before the state tournament.

And it did.

Both teams that appeared in the 2015 district final met again in the consolation game of this year's District 3 tournament, with Greencastle reigning victorious again over Conrad Weiser with a 66-46 decision.

The Blue Devils (23-3) nearly matched their total scoring from Wednesday's semifinal in the first quarter alone, on the way to a the win over the Scouts. G-A will face the District 2 runner-up next Saturday in the first round of the PIAA Tournament.

"I don't really think either team wanted to be playing in the consolation game," Greencastle coach Mike Rhine said. "But we got going first and that made it easier. We started playing harder and the more we scored the more the game got our attention."

Greencastle scored 26 points off of eight 3-pointers in the first eight minutes-- five from leading scorer Jenay Faulkner.

Faulkner earned a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. She scored 21 of her 23 points on seven 3-pointers, aiding Greencastle in one of its most productive 3-point nights of the season. The Blue Devils drained 15 treys, one off from their team-record of 16.

Faulkner was joined by Meghan Hirneisen, who also earned a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards.

"Meghan had one of the best games of her career," Rhine said.

Hannah Crist scored 16 points and had seven helpers.

"I think the kids felt that they had a shot tonight," Rhine said. "It was a winnable game and they did not want to lose two in a row."
