GIRLS: Friday, Forbes Road claims big OT win

HUSTONTOWN - It was a night to remember for the Forbes Road girls basketball team.

Not only did the Cardinals find redemption in an overtime win over Johnstown Christian, a non-league opponent that beat them in OT two weeks ago, but the win will likely propel FR to its first post-season appearance since 2011-2012.

Forbes Road beat the Blue Jays 62-59 in overtime.

“This was a very good team effort, and a good win for this girls program,” Forbes Road coach Jeff Gelvin said. “The girls knew this was like a playoff game, and we had to win to get in (the playoffs).”

Forbes Road (10-12) held a narrow lead going into the final frame, but Johnstown tied it up late. The Cardinals held the ball with 20 seconds left and got a solid look at the basket, but the shot was no good.

“We couldn’t have gotten a better shot,” Gelvin said. “But the girls kept their composure in overtime, even when we fell behind. They didn’t panic and we fought hard to get it back.”

Down four points with two minutes to go in overtime, Malea Truax drained a 3-pointer to get the Cardinals moving. Then Forbes Road used a few opportunities at the foul line that gave it the edge.

McKenzie Gelvin, who led the team with 27 points, drained 4-of-5 foul shots in overtime. Mina Wilt had a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while Truax finished with 13 points. Gelvin had five steals and Courtney Schoen led the team in rebounding with 13 boards.
