WAYNESBORO - The Waynesboro Maidens girls basketball team hit a rough patch recently, with a string of seven-straight losses. But that all ended Saturday in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game against James Buchanan, where they defeated the Rockets 53-39.

Waynesboro took a 30-14 jump on James Buchanan, but were outscored by the Rockets 14-9 in the third quarter.

“We played a great second half,” James Buchanan coach Allison Steiger said. “We just needed to set the tone in the first half.”

Waynesboro (5-13, 3-8 MPC)needed just four scorers to take down James Buchanan, thanks to two 20-point scorers on its roster. Chelsea Cover and Cat Weber scored 23 and 21 points respectively, accounting for 83 percent of the Maidens total offense.

Steiger said, “The kids played hard. If we would have stopped Cover and Weber in the first half, who knows.”

Waynesboro shot 14-for-17 (82 percent) from the foul like, with a perfect 6-for-6 performance from Weber.

The Rockets (7-10, 4-6 MPC) shot 23 percent from the field.

For James Buchanan, Rachel Martin led with 10 points, while Charity Miller scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Everett 62, McConnellsburg 34: McConnellsburg fell to Everett's powerful offense for the second time this year in a Sideling Hill League/ Inter-County Conference loss.

The Warriors jumped on McConnellsburg 34-14 in the first half, and continued to limit the Spartans through the final frames.

Bronwyne Mellott and Kellyn Perry were the only McConnellsburg players to score in the first half. Mellott finished the game with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Perry scored eight points and had seven rebounds for the Spartans (12-5, 8-4 SHL, 7-4 ICC).

Everett had eight scorers and three in double figures including leading scorer Kirsten Mills who scored 16.

Southern Fulton 59, Conemaugh Twp. 47: Oodles of players lifted Southern Fulton to a non-league victory over Conemaugh Township.

“It was a good all-around team win,” SF coach Meagan Raville said. “We had four people in double figures, so it was good to see everyone contribute.”

An Olivia Mottern double-double led the way for the Indians (13-4). She had 22 points and 12 rebounds, 10 of which came on the defensive end.

Celina Merchant scored 11 points and dished out six assists, while Shaye Smartt and Emily Bradshaw split 20 points evenly.

Lakyn Morton also had five assists.

Shalom 57, Cumb. Valley Christian 37: Shalom Christian took down Cumberland Valley Christian in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference game to remain undefeated in league action.

Shalom limited CVC to just four points in the second quarter as it racked up an 11-point lead at the half.

The Flames (14-1, 9-0 MDCC) scored 25 points in the final frame, while CVC had it’s most productive minutes, scoring 17.

Lydia Harris led Shalom with 21 points, while Lexy Poe scored eleven, and Brooke Emge had 10. Poe also had six steals, while Emge grabbed seven.

Loryn Sanders led the Blazers with 22 points.

Mercersburg 55, Hill 32: Mercersburg Academy returned to the court after a flurry of canceled games and defeated the Hill School in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League rivalry game.

The Blue Storm took a 19-1 lead over Hill in the first quarter, and never looked back.

Molly Taylor led the Blue Storm (10-2, 3-0 MAPL) with 14 points. She padded the stat sheet with five assists, four rebounds and four steals. Joana Santos scored 10 points and flirted with a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds.
