GIRLS: Wednesday, Ship rallies to defeat JB

MERCERSBURG - Kara Newell exploded for 15 of her career-high 25 points in a dominating fourth quarter for Shippensburg.

The Lady Hounds outscored James Buchanan 21-10 in the final period to register a 48-38 Mid Penn Colonial Division girls basketball victory on Wednesday night.

Newell sank a pair of 3-pointers and made 5 of 7 free throws to lead her team in the final period. No other player for Ship (6-11, 5-5 MPC) had more than five points.

For the Rockets (7-9, 4-5 MPC), Charity Miller dropped in five 3-pointers and had 17 points and Rachel Martin scored 10 points and ripped down 17 rebounds, including nine off the offensive glass. Aspen Anderson contributed five steals.

JB coach Jen Lauthers said, “It’s not an excuse because everybody’s in the same boat, but you could tell that we haven’t been in the gym (with the school being closed). Charity got hot, and Ship changed some things defensively, and we did not adjust well. Poor shooting (23%) hurt us tonight, too.”
