GIRLS: Monday, Tigers fall to Northern Bedford

LOYSBURG - The Fannett-Metal Tigers girls basketball team had its work cut out for them Monday against Northern Bedford in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game, and the Panthers worked from beyond the arc in a 61-49 win.

Northern Bedford drained 10 3-pointers, accounting for 49 percent of its total scoring, all the while limiting Fannett-Metal early in the game.

The Tigers scored just four points in the first quarter, playing catch-up the rest of the way.

Taylor Coffman led Fannett-Metal in scoring with 21 points, followed by Ally Hoffmann with 11.

Southern Fulton 51, Southern Huntingdon 50 >> Olivia Mottern drained 13 of 15 free throws - including seven of eight in the fourth quarter - to lead Southern Fulton to a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference over Southern Huntingdon.

Mottern hit her final two foul shots to give SF (9-2, 5-2 SHL, 4-2 ICC) the lead for good, and it was preserved when the Rockets missed a contested layup with 10 seconds left.

“It came down to fouls - the refs were calling a lot,” Indians coach Meagan Raville said. “Shaye Smartt and Mottern made the last ones. I was proud of the way the girls started the game (ahead 30-25 at the half) but we need to keep that tempo. We kept our composure, though.”

Mottern dropped in 24 points, while Celina Merchant added 12. Drew Gordon picked up nine rebounds.

McConnellsburg 43, Tussey Mountain 39 >> McConnellsburg was challenged in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game against Tussey Mountain, but had a big fourth quarter to sneak in the victory.

Tussey Mountain outscored McConnellsburg 15-6 in the second quarter, resulting in their lowest-scoring game of the season.

“This was the coldest night of shooting we have ever had,” McConnellsburg coach Brent Seville said. “We've got to play all four quarters of basketball and tonight we played one, and luckily it was the fourth.”

Bronwyne Mellott notched another double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds for McConnellsburg (9-3, 5-2 SHL/ ICC 4-2), whoch outscored the Titans 17-7 in the last quarter. Bridgette Ritchey had eight points, eight boards and five steals.

Everett 57, Forbes Road 21 >> In arguably its biggest challenge of the season, Forbes Road fell to Everett in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game.

Everett kept the Cardinals (5-5, 2-5 SHL/1-5 ICC) from scoring through the first quarter, heading into the break with a 39-6 lead.

“We got off to a really bad start, with no points in the first quarter,” Forbes Road coach Jeff Gelvin said. “We didn’t seem ready to play tonight and Everett played very well. This is the first game of the season we didn’t show up to play, and that has to be partly my fault.”

McKenzie Gelvin still managed to finish in double figures, leading the Cardinals with 11 points. Mina Wilt finished with five points and six rebounds, while Malea Truax had four steals.
