GIRLS HOOPS: Thursday, Fannett-Metal picks up key win

WILLOW HILL -- A strong start to the season got even stronger Thursday night for Fannett-Metal’s girls basketball team.

The Lady Tigers remain undefeated after a 49-43 victory over Tussey Mountain in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game.

“Seven of our girls scored points tonight, and even though some of them only scored two or four points, it seemed like the girls that needed to come up big did,” F-M coach Todd Best said. “We’re a young team, and we’re still growing, so that was a huge win for us. It was a huge boost of confidence.”

It was a battle through the whole game, but the Tigers (3-0, 1-0 SHL/ICC) were strong from the foul line down the stretch to ensure the victory. They were 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 25 seconds of the game.

Ally Hoffmann finished as the team’s offensive leader with 15 points and seven assists. Becky Runk had seven points, three steals and nine rebounds, and Maddy Johns also added three steals.

“We might’ve been a smidge quicker than them, but they were much, much bigger than us,” Best said. “I wanna give credit to Emily Metcalfe. Even though she only had three points, pretty much the whole fourth quarter, she was just dogging their point guard and really limited the flow they could get into.”

Southern Huntingdon 46, McConnellsburg 25 >> Offense was nearly impossible for McConnellsburg to come by in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference loss to Southern Huntingdon.

Alexis Mellott and Justice Seville led the Spartans (1-1, 0-1 SHL, 0-1 ICC) with eight points apiece, while Bronwyne Mellott finished with seven. The rest of the team totaled two points.

“We had a very sluggish start and got into a hole that we couldn’t seem to get out of,” McConnellsburg coach Brent Seville said. “Nothing went right for us. Only scoring 25 points in a game doesn’t give you much of a chance. We shot one foul shot all night long.”
