Chambersburg decides on Barry Purvis to head up girls basketball program

The Chambersburg Area School District has made a decision on who is to fill the vacant position of head varsity girls basketball coach, and they are reaching back into the past.

Dr. Barry Purvis, who coached the Trojan girls during their last extended run of successful seasons, will assume the position. He will be officially hired at a later date.

Below is a statement from the district released through athletic director Jeremy Flores. See Sunday's Public Opinion for a full story.

CASD statement:

A committee with representatives including CASHS Administration and two (2) current girls basketball athletes recently conducted interviews and are recommending Dr. Barry Purvis as the new CASHS girls basketball coach for the 2015-2016 season.

Dr. Purvis was selected from a pool of nine (9) applicants. Until such time as the CASD Board would officially approve Dr. Purvis as the new coach, he will begin working as a volunteer to prepare the athletes for the 2015-2016 season.

According to Jeremy Flores, CASD Athletic Director, Dr. Purvis' reputation as a community leader, an outstanding long-time educator with an extensive coaching background will be a welcome addition to the Trojan coaching staff.

"His commitment to our student athletes will be second to none," said Flores.

Long time Trojan basketball fans will recall Dr. Purvis coaching the girls' 1996 team to the program's lone Mid Penn Conference championship.

"I consider it an honor to be recommended as the new coach. With almost 40 years of coaching, you can say I am passionate about our young people," said Purvis. "I look forward to working with our student athletes to help them reach their full potential."

Purvis' return to the district comes less than a year after he retired after 35 years as an administrator, educator and coach.
