Extra Points: Cody Gustafson etches name in record book

Cody Gustafson has put up some seemingly untouchable numbers for Shippensburg's football team this year.

The reason they seem untouchable?

They are.

Just a few weeks ago, Gustafson broke the Greyhound school record for career receptions and career receiving yards, according to the Shippensburg athletic department.

Heading into the final regular season game of his career, Gustafson has 139 receptions and 2,332 yards.

"To be able to do that just feels amazing," Gustafson said following Friday's game. "We've had so many great athletes come through, it's nice to be up there."

The Greyhounds are also likely playoff-bound, as they are unofficially third in the District 3 Class 4A power rankings, so there's more time for him to add to his record.

INJURY BUG: As if things are difficult enough for the Chambersburg Trojans, now they've been hit with the injury bug.

In Friday night's loss to State College, Chambersburg lost three key players. In addition to Princeton commit Kelton Chastulik's sprained ankle, senior Spencer Seaman was carted off the field with a possible neck injury. Linebacker Justin Reichenbach also left the game with an unknown injury.

"We're not real deep, so you get a bump or a bruise, and that hurts," Trojan coach Mark Luther said after the game. "Jared got hurt on the second or third series of the game, so we lost another starting linebacker."

Chambersburg's last game is at Carlisle, which is also winless in the Mid Penn Commonwealth Division.

PRACTICALLY PERFECT: One area Waynesboro needed improvement from last year was kicking.

After making only 70 percent of his point after attempts (36-for-49) a year ago, Indian junior George Souders has been nearly perfect this season.

Souders has gone 36-for-38 on PATs this year, and has booted a pair of field goals. He didn't kick any last year. Souders has also taken on the role of punter this season and is averaging 38.6 yards on 24 punts. His long was a massive 66 yards.

Souders also posted four shutouts as goalkeeper for Waynesboro's boys soccer team.

G-A OPENS UP: It's no secret that it's been a rough season for Greencastle-Antrim.

The Blue Devils have been struggling to find their identity and haven't put together much of a passing game at all, totaling just 334 yards through the air heading into Week 9.

But in a loss to Northern, Greencastle secured more than 100 passing in a game for the first time this season. Cade McDowell and Thomas Hebert completed just eight passes but combined for 101 yards. The Blue Devils' previous high was 87 versus West Perry.

CENTURY CLUB: It's all the usual suspects in this week's Century Club.

For the third week in a row, Shippensburg's Adam Houser led the area with 152 yards on 11 carries, and he's joined by Gustafson's three-catch, 123-yard performance.

Waynesboro's Brady Beckner has extended his Century Club streak to five weeks in a row, as he gained 131 yards on eight carries this week.

For the first time this season, a player joins the Century Club by gaining a combined 100 rushing and receiving yards. Greencastle's Demetrius Burton had 68 yards on 13 carries to go along with 61 yards on five catches.
