Shippensburg runs over West Perry 55-12

Adam Houser had the kind of numbers in the first quarter that most running backs would be happy to have in a game.

Houser rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns, as Shippensburg jumped out to a quick lead en route to a 55-12 victory over West Perry in a Mid Penn Colonial Division football game Friday night at Memorial Park.

On the first drive for Ship (8-1, 5-1 MPC), Houser rushed for 75 yards on just three plays for a quick touchdown and a sign of things to come.

"Last week we made a lot of mistakes and I just really wanted to make it up to these guys," Houser said.

He did more than make up for it. Despite not playing the entire second half, Houser finished with 157 yards, and the Greyhounds amassed 303 yards on the ground. The holes were there early and often, a testament to the great work of the Shippensburg offensive line.

"We wanted to physically beat them up," Greyhound coach Eric Foust said.

They did just that, hardly needing the outstanding Shippensburg passing game that has allowed Cody Gustafson to break the school record for catches and receiving yards in a career.

"To be able to do that just feels amazing," Gustafson said. "We've had so many great athletes come through, it's nice to be up there."

Even a "quiet" night produced solid numbers for Gustafson. He had three catches for 125 yards, putting him at 1,047 receiving yards on the season, to go long with a pair of long touchdowns.

Ship quarterback Carter Van Scyoc also hit another season milestone. He threw for 148 yards, putting his season total at 1,587.

According to Foust, if there was one thing to work on it would be defense.

"Obviously it's tough to find a bad spot during a game like tonight," Foust chuckled. "We bent tonight, but I don't know if we broke."

West Perry moved the ball at times. Its first touchdown was the result of a 19-play, 90-yard drive, which was an accurate representation of the first half offensively for the Mustangs. Quarterback Dom Salinetro threw 35 passes in the first half, mostly short ones, and occasionally the Mustangs picked up some yards after catches.

"We need to work on closing to the ball," Foust said.

However, two Greyhound interceptions prevented the Mustangs from scoring more and put the game out of reach early.

"It was nice to bounce back like this," Foust said.
