Northern rolls past Greencastle, 34-0

The Northern York Polar Bears captured their fourth straight victory Friday night in a 34-0 rout of Greencastle-Antrim at Kaley Field.

The Polar Bear defense was all over the field from the beginning, forcing G-A (1-8, 1-5 MPC) to go three-and-out on its first five possessions. Northern (6-3, 4-2 MPC) did not allow a first down until well into the second quarter.

The Polar Bears offense, on the backs of Curtis Robison and Kyle Swartz, went for 265 total yards. Swartz led the ground attack with 16 carries for 98 yards and three touchdowns  - two on the ground and one receiving.

Robison threw for 80 yards on four completions, including a 26-yard connection with Swartz for a touchdown in the second quarter. Northern took a 21-0 lead into halftime and never looked back.

The Polar Bears had some questions coming into the game with a starter out on the defensive line and plenty of guys feeling bumps and bruises.

“I think we weathered the storm well," Northern coach Bill Miller said. "We had some kids banged up and we were forced to use some kids that didn’t have a whole lot of experience. Everybody did their jobs and we got a win. We were very concerned coming in. On offense we were able to stay on schedule with play calling and make some good throws.”

Riding a four-game win streak, Northern has put itself in a fight for a district playoff berth. Coming into this week, it was 10th in the district with the top eight teams advancing.

Greencastle drops to 1-8 in this rebuilding season and will host James Buchanan in the final game of the season. The Blue Devils were led by running back Demetrius Burton, who gained 68 yards on 13 carries, and caught five passes for 61 yards. Antwoine Carter made an interception for G-A.

Polar Bear kicker Aidan Alves booted his career-long field goal twice - hitting two 42-yarders. His previous long was 38 yards.
