Extra Points: Front lines lead G-A to win
Often times, a football game comes down to one thing: which team can better control the line of scrimmage.
Greencastle-Antrim won that battle on both sides of the ball in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game against West Perry, and because of that, the Blue Devils walked away with their first win of the season.
“I liked how we controlled the line of scrimmages on both sides of the ball,” G-A coach Chuck Tinninis said. “We read our keys, and had a couple breakdowns in coverage, but we were able to adjust and keep playing.”
West Perry averaged just 2.8 yards per carry on the ground, totaling just 83.
On the flip side, the Blue Devils used a well-rounded offense to earn the win. Tinninis also credited that success to controlling the line of scrimmage.
“We did what we wanted to on offense,” he said. “We threw the ball not a lot, but we threw it well, which is key for us. We mixed it up pretty well - (Cade) McDowell had some carries; our fullback (Caleb Schaeffer) got some carries, so we mixed it up pretty good.”
McDowell had eight carries totaling 55 yards, and Schaeffer had 43 yards on seven carries.
RETURN SPECIALIST: In such a tight-knit game like Waynesboro and Shippensburg’s was on Friday night, special teams don’t always get a lot of attention.
But Noah Chavez turned heads for the Greyhounds with his work returning the ball on kickoffs.
He opened the game with a 30-yard return that set the Hounds up for their double-reverse pass which resulted in an immediate touchdown.
Also, following Ship safety, Chavez broke off a 37-yard return that set the Greyhounds up in enemy territory. That drive also resulted in a score.
“He did a nice job running the ball, too, but the return on the safety was a big return for us,” Ship coach Eric Foust said. “We haven’t used him much this year, and he’s starting to come along. He’ll just add to what we have over time.”
For James Buchanan, Owen Stoner has had 295 return yards through Week 4.
INTERCEPTION MACHINE: Waynesboro sophomore Quentin Gaskill made a statement against the Greyhounds when he picked off two interceptions.
Up to that point, Ship quarterback Carter Van Scyoc had only one interception.
Gaskill has at least three interceptions on the season and has recorded 10 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss.
CENTURY CLUB: Just two receivers and two running backs made their way into this week’s Century Club.
Mercersburg Academy’s Aaron Grant led the area with 146 yards on seven catches, and he also managed 41 yards on the ground. Teammate James Dilallia finished with 105 yards on six catches.
Greencastle’s Demetrius Burton makes an appearance for the second week in a row. This week, he ran for 155 yards on 18 carries.
Chambersburg finished with just 118 rushing yards, but Clay Myers was to thank for nearly all of that. He collected 111 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries.
