Cumberland Valley's run game stifles Chambersburg

It was a rough Homecoming game Friday night for Chambersburg.

The Cumberland Valley Eagles pummeled the Trojans 62-7, amassing 474 yards rushing and defeating them by a final score of 62-7.

The game started out well for the Trojans as they held the Eagles to short gains on runs and forced a fourth down; however, Cumberland Valley converted the down and ended up scoring the first points of the game.

Chambersburg responded strongly to the score with a touchdown of its own from running back Clay Myers. He hit a gap in the CV line and ripped off a 65-yard touchdown run that made it seem like the Trojans could hang with the Eagles.

"They came out very fired up obviously," Cumberland Valley coach Michael Whitehead said, "They scored that touchdown and then our defense finally settled in and we just got rolling and kept rolling."

The rolling that he was referring to was the 55 unanswered points that the Eagles scored in the rest of the game, 28 of which came in the second quarter. Cumberland Valley barely threw the ball at all in the game, attempting only six passes and decimated the Trojans on the ground (45 carries, 474 yards).

The Eagles also scored on every single one of their drives, even though the Trojans did force a couple of fourth downs. CV never punted the ball.

"We had a real hard time slowing their run game down, but they have a very good run personnel," Trojan coach Mark Luther said, "We just couldn't make any plays to stop any of their drives and they kept punching it in."

The Eagles had three players rush for over 100 yards, while the Trojans managed to muster only 141 total yards.

Leading the way for Cumberland Valley was Josiah Quigley, who had 155 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, but his teammates were not far behind him. Chase Ebersole had 133 yards on nine carries and Cole McCoy had 118 on only four carries, in addition to the only receiving touchdown in the game.

"It's a combination of our line playing very well and our running backs did a great job of finding the holes and getting through tackles in the secondary," said Whitehead. "It's what our kids have been doing the whole year and they did it again tonight."

Although Chambersburg was down big early, the team fought hard until the very end and didn't give up.

Luther said, "We talked to them all week about that the one thing that we're going to do is play our hardest. And at the end of the game there, we tried to get a bunch of players out there to get some playing time and experience. I'm not disappointed in the players at all for their effort, we just faced a really good football team tonight."
